well... if it is only 1 yr contract, let say she is 7 months at employment, she only needs to work 2 months and have paid for the rest 10 months? it's not ridiculous? this type of mind set makes Canadian so poor

You can read more from the link above. Usually mat leave are unpaid and they get support from EI.  ...

yes, birth mother gets paid for giving birth. it's not paid by the company. it's ei. and the ei amount is not the same as what she earns from her job. ei is only 55% of the average insured earnings up to a yearly maximum insurable amount of $43,200.

it's not free money, and still have to pay tax since it's a source of income.

the government welcomes kids. this is intended to encourage people to have kids. i think it's fair game. kids are expensive and if the government is not willing to do this, some people won't have kids because they can't afford a year off with no income.

besides, it's 55% and have to pay tax. sounds fair to me.

and if you ask parents, this 55% is only decent. just imagine you earn X dollars, and only for yourself to spend. when you have a kid, you only get half of X and you'll have to split it between you and the kid in the 1st year. (this scenario excludes other subsidies)

I only know of a system so funny as to have someone relieves for a mat leave to take mat leave, then hire another person to relieve this other mat leave, going round and round and round, then, paid for her no need to go back to work and got complained.... ended up our school district said they have no money and need all students to stay home for 10 more days because of shortage of budge, this is weelli weelli funny....  it sounds too funny to the whole world

    Mat leave is nothing something invented only for Canada. It's very common around the world, including HK. http://www.labour.gov.hk/eng/faq/cap57h_whole.htm#q1

  Maternity leave is a benefit we should deserve for paying such high tax.  IMHO, mat leave is no different than any other situations where people get laid off and have to get support from EI.
