I keep only credit card statements for 12 months. Bank statements and phone statement are online now.

I save a PDF version (if it's paper statement, I scan to PDF). With the hard drive space available nowadays, I will probably save them forever. I never had a real need to go back to old statements, but sometimes I searched through them just to compare past to present.

at least couple years.  last time i lost the receipt for warranty, but the company is so good, they accept my credit card statement as proof.

if you are receiving estatment, make sure you download it and save it on your harddrive.  for some banks, if you cancel your credit card/account, you will not able to view any old statements online.  when you lost or upgrade your credit card, they will give you a new card number and you won't able to view any of your old statements online anymore, beware
