VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - B.C. has signed a two-year agreement with the Philippines aimed at easing the province's labour shortage. Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen says B.C. needs to attract 30,000 workers a year just to maintain economic momentum.
Hansen says this particular agreement is aimed at boosting the tourism, hospitality and construction sectors. "I think most people in BC know we have experienced labour shortages across virtually all industries. So this is a great step forward that I think is going to facilitate more participation by workers from the Philippines in the B.C. economy."
The Philippines is the third largest source country for immigrants to B.C. The agreement will see skilled workers matched with local employers struggling with labour shortages.
