AC is a little bit more expensive than JAL, but their seat is bigger (Airbus 767-300) compare to JAL (Boeing 747-400)
JAL's meal sucks, this is what my sister told me back in June.
AC's meal is better than what I expected, however the flight attendent has no service at all!
I took AC last Dec and will take AC again in Sept.

So I guess it's either AC or JAL... but for AC, I know their prices can flutuate within one day so I have to keep an eye on it from time to time... (I never been to overseas, but I fly frequently within Canada)
General speaking, is JAL cheaper than AC? And should I book the ticket online by myself or through travel agency?
generally speaking, it's a matter of luck and you have to check the price everyday. last year ... i saved $200 per ticket because I delayed the purchase for 2 days!
If you don't mind to transfer and waiting for about 2 hours at Shanghai Pudong, you can choose 東方航空. Think you can save a little bit $$ there.... consult with your travel agent
