Canadian families are no longer bound by tradition

Be the first to Comment  0 Recommendation(s) VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The definition of the typical Canadian family has changed.  Common-law arrangements are now the most popular, and being single may have just become the new norm.

This morning, The Vanier Institute of the Family released its latest report called 'Family Counts.'  Based on census data from 2006, common-law families are emerging as the most common family-type in Canada.

So, News1130 hit the streets to see if you've noticed any new family trends.  One man agrees there are more common-law couples, more singles and a lot more divorces.  He added there has also been an increase, in his opinion, of single parents.

The numbers bear that out.  The report reveals nearly one in five kids lives in a single-parent household.  And for the first time, stats suggest there are more unmarried than married Canadians.
