News1130's Mike Lloyd almost gets a very quick $315,000 newscruiser

0    VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - His normal drive is a rusted out Toyota 4runner with a flatulent Doberman in the back, so we decided to give News1130's Mike Lloyd a bit of an upgrade.

Mike took one of the stars of this year's Vancouver International Auto Show out for a spin. It's a $315,000, 560 horsepower, 'Arancia Borealis' orange Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder, courtesy of Lamborghini Vancouver.

Brand Manager Robert Rons was in the passenger seat, a little nervous. "Yeah. If you must ask, I'll be honest."

The throaty rumble of the V10 coming to life echoed through the shop as Mike and Robert pulled out, heading for Point Grey and the roads around UBC.

Robert is quick to point out how much safer supercars are today, with all-wheel drive, electronic stability control and even better fuel mileage. But does the driver of a Lamborghini really care about fuel economy?

"Not really. It's not a primary concern with a car like this. The luggage capacity is not an issue either. They are the last questions that get asked, how many suitcases can go in the car and how far can it go on a tank of gas. It's got enough space for a Visa card and that's all you need," he laughs. "It goes naught to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. Top speed is just under 300 km/h."

How fast is Mike allowed to go? Robert is quick to reply. "Let me have a look at the next sign here. Oh, it says 50."

And that's what they stuck to. Mike swears it.

There was a close call as a pedestrian walked out in front of the car at UBC. You could excuse Robert's wince and loss of stomach lining as a collision repair shop rental nearly rear-ended the Gallardo. News1130 nearly picked up a very quick Lamborghini newscruiser. Slightly bruised.

You can see Mike's Gallardo in the Supercar International Showcase of Power at the 2011 Vancouver International Auto Show, March 29-April 3 at the new Vancouver Convention Centre.
