VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Three people have been struck in Vancouver since Saturday, including a woman who died after being hit near East Hastings and Jackson Ave.
The latest incident saw a senior struck and severely injured near the intersection of 1st and Commercial Drive around 4:30 this morning.
Sergeant Paul Ballard with the VPD says pedestrians need to remember that the rules of the road also apply to them.
"All the same distractions that can happen to a driver can happen to a pedestrian, and if we're a driver at some point, we're going to be a pedestrian as well," he says. "[Things like] Staying off the cell phone, obeying the lights."
In Vancouver there have been 11 pedestrian fatalities in the first six months of 2011. That's already two more than the total for all of 2010.
Suspected hit-and-run driver turns himself in
The driver suspected in the hit-and-run that killed a 30-year-old Vancouver woman in the Downtown Eastside over the weekend has turned himself into police.
Vancouver Police Const. Lindsey Houghton says it happened early Saturday morning at East Hastings and Jackson.
"We are speaking with him and we have recovered the vehicle," he tells News1130. "It has been seized and it is now undergoing examination."
Anyone who saw the hit-and-run is asked to call Vancouver Police. |
