VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A high streamflow advisory will likely be issued for the Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley portions of the Fraser River.
The high water seen now in the Prince George area is expected to surge through the lower Fraser River in two or three days.
The BC River Forecast Centre is waiting for the water level to peak in Prince George.
"We're going to feed that information into our models, and with that would be able to give a more accurate forecast of what we are expecting down on the lower Fraser" said forecast hydrologist Luanne Chew.
She says the Mission gauge is a benchmark for conditions on the lower Fraser.
"The most recent water level reading on the Fraser at Mission is 5.1 metres," she says.
The River Forecast Centre website says patrols will begin on the dykes in Mission when the water level hits six metres. The Fraser River in Mission overflows when the water hits 8.5 metres.
The latest reading in Prince George is 9.8 metres, but Chew says that doesn't mean a similar level will be recorded in Mission. Chew explains that because of varying river dynamics, such as width and depth, one gauge can't predict whether overflows will happen downstream.
Several homes were evacuated over the weekend in Prince George as a precaution because of the threat of flooding. So far no homes have fallen victim to the raging river, but the water is very close to seeping into a couple |
