VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Former Vancouver Canuck Rick Rypien will be remembered during a celebration of his life tomorrow afternoon in front of Rogers Arena.
Last night, a growing makeshift memorial for the troubled player was growing outside the rink. Alongside a Canadian flag with flowers, there were a number of posters that said "Forever a Canuck" and "Rest in Peace Rick Rypien."
Port Moody's Calvin Ing formed a set of tea lights on the pavement into "R 37 R." Thirty-seven was Rypien's jersey number.
Twice during his time with the Canucks did Rypien took a leave of absence.
Tomorrow's event is being driven by social media. It's set for 2 p.m. People are being asked to gather at the Roger Nielson statue where a book of condolences will be passed around for everyone to sign.
The body of the 27-year-old forward was found in his family's home in Coleman, Alberta yesterday. Police say the death isn't considered suspicious.
The Vancouver Canucks issued the following statement in regards to the passing of Rick Rypien:
"It is with tremendous sadness that the Vancouver Canucks confirm the passing of Rick Rypien. Rick has been a beloved member of the Canucks family for the past six years. Rick was a great teammate and friend to our players, coaches and staff. We send our deepest condolences to the Rypien family at this most difficult time |
