VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - At least one Vancouver business damaged by the Stanley Cup Rioters will go after the worst offenders in its own way.
London Drugs' President and CEO Wynne Powell says they're just biding their time. Even if there are criminal charges in the near future, that's just the beginning.
"We at London Drugs will chase some people in a civil court case. We are holding off until some of the criminal matters have been handled because we don't want to prejudice the criminal court case in any way."
Powell adds the company has been handing over all kinds of evidence. "Police are very ecstatic and happy with the quality of the video footage and the images taken during the riot outside and the stealing within London Drugs."
He admits it's not likely they'll recover what they lost. More than $424,000 worth of merchandise was taken, and that doesn't include $200,000 in damage to the store itself.
Powell wishes police here could charge rioters, like they've done in London.
Downtown Blenz store re-opening
Meanwhile, although many businesses were damaged by the riot, only one remains closed to this day. The Blenz coffee shop at West Georgia and Richards will finally re-open their doors tomorrow.
During the riot, the popular shop's windows were broken, merchandise was stolen, and equipment was damaged. The store owner and two employees were forced to hide in a backroom while hooligans trashed the store.
Customers will be welcomed back tomorrow with free drinks served up by the coffee chain. Blenz has also filed a lawsuit against 150 unnamed rioters for damage to their three downtown locations. |
