VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - It's a back-to-school twist on the three 'R's: Rest, Relationships, and Routine.
Those are the keys to an easy, stress-free transition this fall, according to UBC Educational Psychologist Kimberly Schonert-Reichl.
The mother of two says it starts with rest. She suggest parents start scaling back bedtimes now.
"What we know from the research is sleep is so critical for our functioning, for our ability to pay attention, for our ability to manage stress," she says.
"You can start saying 'we have to start getting ready for school' and sleep is important... and what is so critical is explaining to children why you're doing what you're doing. From the youngest to the oldest, they all appreciate it."
The mother of two also explains why it's important to help children develop relationships with kids who might be registered in the same class by setting up a few play-dates before school starts.
"Now is the opportune time if a child is starting a new school or kindergarten for the first time," she says.
"The research really showed that if a child had started school with just one other child that he or she knew, in just three months he or she liked school more, and by the end of the school year had higher achievement and had more friends in the kindergarten classroom."
She adds discussing school routines - such as lunch-making protocol - before the start of the year will also help your kids adjust. |
