KANAGAWA
A man has been arrested for arson and murder after he allegedly burned down the house in which is estranged wife was living, causing the death of both of her parents, police said Thursday. The accused, who has been identified as Kazutaka Maeda, has denied the charges, according to investigating officers.
According to TBS, the charge relates to an incident that occurred in Atusgi on March 4 at around 2 a.m. Maeda’s estranged wife Mai, 40, was living with her parents in a wooden, two-floor house. Maeda is accused of setting fire to the first floor, following which the entire structure was destroyed. Maki’s 70-year-old father and her 64-year-old mother burned to death in the blaze.
It is believed that Maeda lived with his wife, their two sons and his wife’s parents from 2004 to 2008, at which point he moved out because of a reported personality clash with his parents-in-law, TBS said. At the time the fire started, the couple’s two sons were staying with the accused.
The house and its contents were jointly insured by Maeda and his wife’s parents. As a result, Maeda is believed to have received an insurance payout of 30 million yen following the blaze.
