Hong Kong conviction over 'old man' plane disguise on flight to Vancouver
HONG KONG — A Hong Kong court Monday convicted an airport worker in connection with the bizarre case of a Chinese man who flew to Vancouver last year disguised as an elderly Caucasian male, local radio said.
Airport ground services agent Chau Pak-kin was found guilty of being part of a conspiracy to smuggle people with false passports and boarding passes, RTHK reported. Sentencing was adjourned.
Eight people, including two other former airport employees, were arrested in January in connection with the case in which a Chinese man donned a silicone mask to fool immigration officials.
The man, who had "young-looking hands", shocked passengers when he was seen emerging from the aircraft's washroom as a young Asian male during the flight in October last year, according to an earlier Canada Border Services Agency report.
The suspects were believed to have supplied false papers to migrants once they reached Hong Kong, a city of seven million that maintains a semi-autonomous status within China.
The Chinese man — believed to be in his twenties — sought asylum after arriving in Vancouver, and was detained by Canadian immigration officials.
Local media reports said he is from China's Fujian province.
