VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A Coroner's inquest into the deaths of three men after a fire at a rooming house in East Vancouver begins today.
Advocates for the poor are hoping the issue of affordable housing will be front and centre during the proceedings, which are expected to last at least three days.
Garland McKay, Dwayne Rasmussen and Stephen Yellowquill died, likely of smoke inhalation, when the home on Pandora Street went up in flames on December 22nd.
Investigators say the fire was caused by a combination of frayed Christmas lights and an old extension cord near a mattress.
At the time of the fire, seven men were living in the home that was being used illegally as a rooming house
