VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - First they told us we "Can't Trust Cummins" now the BC Liberals are warning voters they "Can't Afford Dix."  That's the name of a new attack website launched by the governing party, and the NDP is not impressed.

The site features the now familiar rhetoric from the government regarding what it calls the "nightmare 90s," when the New Democrats last ran the province.  And it includes everything from two-credit downgrades to the infamous memo to file incident when current NDP Leader Adrian Dix worked for then-Premier Glen Clark.

"As the back room operative for the NDP government in the '90s, Dix is responsible for the financial chaos left behind when his party was booted from power," says Chilliwack MLA John Les.

Opposition Caucus Chair Shane Simpson says the site smacks of desperation.  "It really shows us a political party that's burned out, a party that doesn't want to debate ideas and whose only purpose at this point seems to be to try to hang on to power."

Simpson adds the Liberals know their brand is tarnished and that's why they're now going after the opposition.  "British Columbians have lost confidence in the BC Liberals and clearly Miss [Christy] Clark hasn't been able to do anything to change public opinion there," says Simpson.

An Ipsos Reid poll released last week gave the NDP a healthy seven-point lead over the Liberals.  It found 45 per cent of decided voters in this province chose the NDP and 38 per cent would throw their support behind the Liberals.  While 12 per cent were in favour of the BC Conservatives and six per cent preferred the Green Party.

The next provincial election will be in 2013.
