HMV to close flagship downtown Vancouver store

VANCOUVER - High rent and a decrease in sales have forced music retailer HMV Canada to close the doors of its flagship store at Burrard and Robson this January, the company announced this morning.

“It’s regretful, really,” said Nick Williams, president of HMV Canada, in a telephone interview from Toronto.

“The last thing that we want to do is leave Vancouver’s downtown ... but a store of that magnitude unfortunately does not fit into our long-term real estate strategy.”

The closure of the 50,000-square-foot, three-storey Robson location, as well as a smaller retail space in the Richmond Centre, will affect the jobs of more than 60 employees.

Williams said a portion of the staff will be moved to HMV’s nine remaining locations in British Columbia. But, he added, “Clearly we won’t be able to do that for everyone.”

In the meantime, customers can look forward to scoring some deals on movies and music at both the Robson and Richmond locations. Beginning Saturday at 9 a.m., both stores will be holding sales on CDs and DVDs, with prices marked down by 20 to 50 per cent. Discount vouchers will also be issued to be used in other HMV locations in B.C.

Now that they are on clearance sale, it might be worth your while ga. Of course, when they are at normal price, HMV is super ging expensive la.

that store is too large.   So, what will the next tenant be?  Hmmm better to have a Chinese restaurant. lol.   Well. tehre is no good chinese restaurant in DT anyway. lol
