if someone is needed to be blamed, that would be the hk gov who keep allowing more and more and more tourists from China to come. That make those landlords know that their buildings can make much more $$ with those shops who do business with China tourists. Hence, the sales needed to get more sales amount....
ok, I suck in English, but u know what I mean (I hope)

Allowing more tourists from China is not the real problem.
The bigger reason is the difference in import tax rates between HK and mainland China.
China, just like Canada and many other countries impose import tax on imported products. As a result, for the same product, it is more expensive in mainland China than in HK. So the tourists feel it is more affordable to buy it Hong Kong.
HK as a "freeport" has nearly no import tax. So to solve the root of the problem, HK needs to think about imposing more import tax. If they do that, the tourists will not buy as much as before. |
