Thousands turned out this weekend to take in the opening of the Pacific National Exhibition, despite the overcast skies.
PNE spokeswoman Laura Ballance said crowds were a bit sparser than past years due to the sporadic rain, but with sunshine in the forecast all week, organizers are expecting plenty of people to pass through the gates of the annual fair, on until Labour Day.
“We always do catch rain or we usually do,” Ballance said Sunday, noting this weekend’s showers unfortunately corresponded with the fair’s “key” opening days. “The good news is there’s lots of time for people to make up their minds to come to the fair.”
With a strong entertainment lineup for the PNE’s Summer Night concert series, Ballance said she expects Tuesday’s performance by B.C.-born country star Dean Brody will be a popular draw. Other big names such as The Beach Boys, The Proclaimers and Lights will also take to the PNE amphitheatre during the fair’s 17-day run.
Old favourites such as the Superdogs, Family Feud and Peking Acrobats have returned, with new review show ’80s Forever aiming to get people up and dancing.
And if cloudy skies do linger, Ballance said PNE fans may want to consider coming down to take advantage of the shorter lines.
“One of the things that we always say is the inclement weather does (ease) the crowds and that’s the day that we always recommend our own families to come.”
