Award-winning photo shows harsh reality of Canada's tundra

Wednesday, October 14, 2015, 1:51 PM -        A Canadian man has been awarded the top prize in the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition for 2015 with a gripping photograph depicting the struggle to survive between two foxes in northern Manitoba.

The photograph, titled  'A Tale of Two Foxes,' is a beautiful but haunting portrait of the struggle for life in the subarctic climes of Cape Churchill, located in Wapusk National Park on Hudson's Bay.

The image was captured by Don Gutoski, a Canadian surgeon and amateur photographer from London, Ontario. It shows a red fox feeding on the carcass of a white Arctic fox, its freshly caught prey.

Gutoski was following the pair closely, taking pictures amid -30C temperatures, before getting close enough to capture the award-winning shot. "By the time I got close enough to capture the event, the fight was over and the victor was feeding," Gutoski said in his submission.
