Have you taken a CMNS course at SFU? How was it?

I am not a CMNS major but I took few CMNS courses like 110, 130, 221,371 and of course CMNS 375 (So far I think this is one of the most popular class for HK students )

All CMNS classes (except 371) I took were pretty straight forward, and if you know some friends who took 375 they can properly assist you as well.

CMNS 371 focuses on writing (for me, i wrote 50+ pages of paper in total, plus a 50% Final); it was a horrible experience

i am a 4th year cmns major in sfu...

what i have learnt over these years is that ...
if you are good at writing papers, a.k.a BS, drawing related ideas from the readings ...
you will do fine in cmns ...because it is all theoretical...except for several publishing courses ..
and me and my friends in cmns all agree that ... the lower level courses are harder than the upper level ones,
in terms of the ideas they are trying to teach...
be prepared to do a lot of readings if u're taking one of the cmns courses..

pre-requisite to all cmns courses: cmns110 or cmns 130
the fun ones, not restricted to cmns students... cmns375, cmns 473, cmns 478 (print design courses), cmns 428 (where you get to sit down with the prof every 2 weeks, read and write paper...thats all you do, no lecture at school... but notice that the reading is hard.)
boring/known to be harder ones... cmns 240, cmns 261, cmns 235, cmns 362( 6 credits)
known to be easy credits: cmns 260 (it's like the Stat we did in math 12...easy if you are good at math.)

thank you for all the info! i noticed that cmns 110 and 130 are only offered through distance ed, how did you guys do? any profs you recommend?

I did my CMNS 110 in Burnaby campus. The prof. was Stuart Poyntz and he was a pretty fair marker. He gave all mid-term and final exam questions in advance, so you can study and prepare. I think it is better to take this class on campus rather than distance (unless you can concentrate lots of reading alone)

By the way CMNS 375 was a easy 4 credits elective for many students. When I was in that class I can say over 40% students were from Hong Kong. My tutorial (around 15 ppl in total) and I remember 8-10 students were from Hong Kong as well.

e0131, can you tell me what you did in CMNS 478? and which prof you were with?

i'm doing some course planning right now and i need 7 upper division courses with 2 of them being 400 level. So far, i have chosen CMNS 375, 336, and 473.

cmns 473 and 375 look VERY interesting... How is it graded though? curved?
