This is an interesting topic....
I never hire a maid to clean up my place and interest to find out the followings:

1) Are you guys very very busy and no time to clean up your home?
2) How big is your house?

I am living in a 1400 sq ft townhouse and I do all cleaning myself weekly.
Vacuum, wash toilets (3) , bedroom cleaning (4) and I can finish it within an hour.

Now, I find out many people need this service and I wonder if I need this in the future.

Well, I can't say I am that busy. But I am extremely allergic to dust. So I can do wash toilets, clean bath tub and clean kitchen. But there are still A LOT to do even if my bf will vacuum (which doesn't happen often enough).
Still to clean: windows, counter tops, kitchen and bathroom floors, kitchen vent fan cleaning and other dusting

My place is small but it's really dusty because of all the construction around. So... I am giving up... and having a cleaning lady really helps to get it a kick start.
btw I am not as fast. I can spent a whole hour just to clean toilet, bath tub and bathroom floor, sink, + counter.

Possible reasons for hiring a housemaid:
- allergic to certain stuff such as dust, cleaning detergent etc
- too busy
- too lazy
- too rich

For me, too busy, too lazy, carpol tunnel, tennis elbow, other priorities, allergic to dust, ....
lots of reasons!
