Usually it's 2 weeks, especially for large companies. Small companies might need more time to find replacement and you might want to give them more advance notice, though there shouldn't be anything stopping you from leaving in 2 weeks if you really have to. It's just better to let them replace you so it'll work out for them as well.

Of course, check with your employer/contract to be sure. As well, vacation times are also usually paid in your last pay cheque as vacation pay.

In my company people also give 2 week notice.
But could leave a day or 2 before if they have some vacation day left.

According to the employment standards act of BC, there is no requirement to give notice to employers. If you are working in the federal industry(telecommunications, airlines, banking) then the labor code of Canada is what you follow and I don't think there is a requirement for those either.

Like other people said, give REASONABLE time. Reasonable based on what your position is. If its a McD position, 30 minute notice is sufficient. If its a manager position @ some big company, probably 2-3 months. It's just a good gesture so that they won't start saying bad stuff about you when you need them for reference.

my company's contract states 2 weeks....but if you're going to work for a competitor, then they will pay u the 2 weeks pay and want u to leave immediately....

I think the employer can fire you on spot if you give him the letter.  Since you give him the letter, you already determine to leave the company already and if the employer does not care if anyone can fill your shoes in the company, he can let you go right away.

In the end, it all depends on your contract.

For most position, 2 weeks is usually the standard. For my position, I think 30 mins is more then enough... haha  I doubt they want me to work around after I decide to quit.

I have another question regarding to resignation....

What kind of reason would you use?

Will you say the truth

Will you lie?

How possible can your lie go technically?

Never burn your bridges unless you are 200% certain they will not influence any future employment roles. (basically, don't dish dirt on them unless you've won lotto and will never work again).

Just say you are going onto new challenges. If you were a boss, you would not expect the people under you to do what they do forever. People have their own goals and/or situations change.

2 weeks is for lower level job, 3weeks-4weeks will be better if you are working in a big company

e.g. say you got another job offer, is that possible to quit with a reason.....say one of your family member got issues(e.g. depression) and need intensive care so you have to go on leave/ take care of him/her full time?

I mean, by privacy reason the doctor won't release your family member's situation to a company, so basically your company can't sort it out..... (my thoughts only)

It's cheap but...yeah don't burn the bridges ma right?
