Swearing Poem

I don't know where exactly I should post this poem that I got from English class... so ya

This be the verse - Philip Larkin

They f**k you up, your mom and dad

They may not mean to, but they do.

They fill you with the faults they had

And add some extra, just for you.

But they were f**ked up in their turn

By fools in old-stylen hats and coats,

Who half the time were soppy-stern

And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man

It deepens like a coastal shelf.

Get out as early as you can

And don't have any kids yourself.

what does it do with the poem?

I heard that people from Kwantlen talking about it. People were like, the teacher was saying f*ck the whole class.

How can I escape this cycle?
Must I turn with the world
In the direction it dictates?
Am I the wind's slave?

used to be langara

12 lines? Not a SONNET

Free verse? no, it has a rythmic scheme
Haiku? no....too long and off topic
ode?  no.....to informal

Blank verse? I guess so......

from English class? I would be offended if I was in that class. i would feel personally insulted.

i don't find it funny. i would guess the instructor was laughing at the students silently in his/her mind when he/she gave out this poem.

3 stanzas with 4 lines each.
8 syllables for each line with an ABAB rhyme pattern but no recognizable meter.
Good attempt but lack foundational poetry skills.

(Modern poems do not need any of the meter and rhyme stuff but if you bother to rhyme and have a fixed structure for the stanzas you are expected to observe meter as well for consistency in style unless you have a compelling reason not to do so.)
