In many ways, Lou Jing is a typical young woman from Shanghai. Pretty and confident, she speaks Mandarin heavily accented with the lilting tones of the Shanghai dialect and browses the malls of this huge city for the latest fashions.

But there is one thing that distinguishes this 20-year-old from her peers, something that has made her the unwitting focus of an intense public debate about what exactly it means to be Chinese: the color of her skin. Born to a Chinese mother and an African-American father whom she has never met, the theater student rocketed into the public consciousness last month when she took part in an American Idol–esque TV show, Go! Oriental Angel.

The marketing gurus for the series could hardly have dreamed of a better promotional gimmick when they started to investigate the backgrounds of the dozens of pop-star wannabes to root out the competitors' mushy stories of triumph over adversity that are a well-worn staple of the genre. Here was a tale guaranteed to attract eyeballs: a girl of mixed race, brought up by a single Chinese mother, struggling to gain acceptance in a deeply conservative, some would say racist, society.

The strategy worked — perhaps too well. In August, Lou's appearance on the show not only boosted viewer numbers but also sparked an intense nationwide debate about the essential meaning of being Chinese. Over the past month on Internet chat rooms, where modern China's sensitive issues are thrashed out by netizens long before they reach the heavily censored mainstream media, Lou's ethnicity has been the subject of a relentless barrage of criticism, some of it crudely racist. Many think she should not have been allowed to compete on a Chinese show, or at least not selected to represent Shanghai in the national competition. She doesn't have fair skin, which is one of the most important factors for Chinese beauty. What's more, her mother and her biological father were never married; morally, the argument goes, this kind of behavior shouldn't be publicized, so she shouldn't have been put on TV as a young "idol."

These kinds of posts on the most popular chat rooms have attracted thousands of comments. A few have been supportive of Lou, but the rest range from expressions of fear and ignorance to outright racism. One of the most popular posts about Lou Jing on the KDS Life forum asked in mock seriousness, "Is it possible that she is Obama's daughter?" Another poster said, "I can't believe she's so shameless that she would go on TV." Most of the critics are agreed on one point: that this black woman cannot be regarded as a "real" Chinese.

As recently as the 1970s, foreigners were largely barred from living in China, let alone marrying a local. China does not easily accept mixed-race children as true-blooded Chinese: as soon as a child is born, the parents are required to register with the authorities as to which of the 56 government-approved ethnic groups their child belongs; there are no mixed-race categories. Lou feels she is very much Chinese. "When I meet somebody for the first time, they'd often ask me how I can speak Chinese so well, and I tell them, 'Because I'm a Chinese — of course I can speak my mother tongue well,' " Lou says defiantly. "I don't like to be treated differently."

What is the difference between a yellow skinned Chinese to speak in fluent English, and a black skinned Caucasian/Shanghaiese-African-American mixed to speak in fluent Chinese? It could be weird in either way anyways. It's not about racism, it's because people are narrow minded.

This is not racism at all. In North America, people have seen a large number of non-white people speaking good English. But in China, foreigners or foreign-looking people speaking good Chinese is regarded as something of a novelty.
Like the Canadian Mark Henry Rowswell, known as 大山, is very popular in China. He can speak good Mandarin. But tons of other people can speak good Mandarin. He is popular because he is a foreigner speaking good Mandarin.

This is not racism at all as most people in China do not have a lot of acquaintances who are Chinese but speak foreign languages, and also foreigners who speak Chinese. Over time, this mentality will change with more contacts with foreingers. It's not like they have millions of foreign-looking white or Hispanic people in China.

It is understandable because the western powers invaded and looted China and then the Japanese committed the Nanjing massacre, now they are rapidly improving their living standards. Foreigners not only mistreated the Chinese, but they killed millions of Chinese, during the Ching dynasty and the WWII.

I think the problem is with people always carry their past for generations and generations. Honestly, how many Chinese in our generation these days are very knowledgable about the history and war enough to say because long long long time ago, we've been mistreated, so therefore, we are not nice to you today?

Move On! People! Holding grudges and using them as scapegoat for negative feelings and action is just unrealistic and pointless!

Seriously, Chinese did invent gun power, paper, compass hundreds of years ago......and today, what are they proud of and talk about STILL? "gunpower, paper, compass"! Other countries had taken these and improved them each day! But Chinese still say: "We invented gunpower, paper, compass!"

The point is: MOve On! Open up! Stop thinking we are better than others to be racist against others!

NO need to get personal and bring in a person's hobby into this discussion. My opinion is based on what I've observed and my experience in daily life and job (having to interact with people of all nationality everyday for over 10 yrs). I have not heard that many racist remarks, comments, fr. another nationality compare to Chinese! They spill these comments like beans shamelessly as if it a normal part of daily conversation: "Your Black technician is useless", "Gwai low is stupid", "Us Chinese is better", "Your contract is in English! I don't read English ga, so it doesn't count!", "Wah, your company is so big, so how come no Chinese technician?", "Don't know how the gwi low do things geh!"...

Other things I observe daily include budding into line ups at a grocery store, picking nose in the public, messing up newspapers while picking from the bottom of pile, poison foods, etc. the list goes on and on...So with that in mind, what gives them the rights to be racist? Of course other people have their own shot comings too but sticking with the subject of this thread, I am not going to bring in the Hindi, South Africian, Mexican, Japanese, Macounese, Austrialian, blah blah...

I am speaking in terms of generalization. I don't hate these individuals because I don't know them. I don't belive one nation is more superior than another. However, when one specific nationality talks low to another, that's an idication that they feel they are better than everyone else. This is what I hate to see. They put themselves in a position where people will attack them. (When people taai ng gor ngaan, they speak up!). Just like what you are doing here, except your comment brought in my hobby into this discussion which is pointless and like a little kid picking a fight. This is open discussion, I am not interested in convincing you to agree with me. I am just interested in expressing my opinion which is based on my experience and observation for years. I am not going to say it will never change in the future if I encounter something more possitive.

God is the reason we live in dismay
It is his will that this world's suffering
If we do not believe what you foretell
We can expect afterlife will be hell

You are the one who killed his own son
We are the ones you're blaming it on
Lust was created beginning with hymn
When we indulge we are guilty of sin
Torture our lives with confusion and lies
Mass contradiction, religious facades

BLAME IT ON GOD
BLAME IT ON GOD
BLAME IT ON GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LIAR

Lord of salvation keep looking away
It is your will that this world goes astray
Take us each day from this place you unworthed
Unfulfilled promise of heaven on earth

You are the one who killed your own son
We are the ones your hatred is on
Children are dying and this you're content
Where is your profit in what you have left
No intervention from angels above
God is the reason that Satan lives on

China improving its technology everyday but so as everyone.  It is always a relative game.  Look at what China showed in their military yesterday.  Anything outstanding that China should be proud of?  Yes, few have been improved to go at par with the western, but not all.

Even China today has a strong economy power, that doesn't buy Chinese the right to be racist.

And why people shouldn't pick on Chinese in a message board?  Chinese aren't dumb people, and why can't they accept positive criticize and improve ever better.  I said we should do that more (only the positive way).  Yes, everyone should broaden his/her horizon, but more important is to think properly.  Be an open minded person and be a humble person.

This shows your racism against the Chinese again. Cheap labour is not the only advantage of investing in China. If foreigners want cheap labour, they can invest in Africa or India, which are even cheaper.

In fact, China's market is one of the world's largest that many international companies have to invest there in order to maintain growth. Companies like GM, Microsoft, Nokia etc invest in China because it is a big market with rising living standards. China provides a lot of well-educated talents which perform high-tech research for multi-national companies. China possess superior infrastructure that others developing countries like India cannot match.

Like you said, if whole US economy crumbles, Chinese economy will be affected. But still China is the lender of money to the US. This shows the importance of the Chinese economy to the world as countries like US/Japan are not growing at all.

Maybe you are right, the Chinese are racists, and you are a good example. There are a few self-hating LYKs who are racist against the Chinese.

The Chinese are proud of themselves because of the progress that they have made. They have come a long way, and of course, still have a long way to go.

But you should not look down on the Chinese just because "they are not as good as the western countries". But most other countries are not as good as the western countries yet anyway. No other race in the world would look down on their own kind just because "they are not as good as the western countries".  Most other races are proud of their own kind no matter how poor or backward they are. Look at the Indians, Africans, Mexicans etc, they are still proud of their own country and culture, even though they maybe poor or "not as good as the western countries yet"

People like you should give the Chinese encouragements rather than making all these unconstructive comments.

haha I do not hold any racism against China.  I only speak of the fact.  The only people who cannot improve themselves are whom did not see their own mistakes.  I do not really like you insist that China is all good.  There are a lot of people like you who cannot see what's wrong with China people these days so that's why China is one step behind other countries.  The only thing they are famous of is counterfeiting other countries' product and claimed their own.  They cannot even make their own innovating product.

You are wrong.  If China did not have cheap labor, business would not set factory in China.  China is also famous for its great population and a lot of people are wiling to work at cheaper cost comparing to other countries.

Pointing out what are China's mistake does not make I hold racism against China.  In another topic about people from China living in Vancouver, you can find there are a lot of people are so "high standard".  One example I have seen was that a mom from China letting her kid peeing in the park ground and even giving face when I saw it.  If you call that "high stand", I got nothing to say.

You lost the argument, again you tried to divert attention. I didn't say China is all good. Why are you making things up? No country in the world is all good, but the Chinese have made big improvements, they still have a lot of work to do, just like India and many other countries.

You are wrong, it is the Indians who are famous for having a rapidly growing population. the Indians, vietnamese and africans have even lower wages. But foreigners select to invest in China, because china has very good infrastructure, large market, and a large number of well-educated research talents. This is why China is the leader among other developing countries like India, Brazil, Russia etc. China has provided the stabilizing force in this economic crisis, when most western counties are going bankrupt.

China has a very pragmatic plan of developing their economy step by step. It is going to take many decades to develop the whole country. But China has already pulled more people out of poverty, in a shorter period of time than any other other country in history. It is the Indians who cannot see their own mistakes, as they bragged about how they can compare with China, when in fact the Indians are way behind. Most Indians do not even have reliable water supply and electricity.

Taiwan, on the other hand, is only famous for chen shui bian, who is corrupted, like most other Taiwan politicians and businesses. He even wants to sue the US government, for not saving him. No wonder Taiwan's economy has been stalling for years.

Funny how our 50 cents Peter boy is once again spewing his nonsense as usual.

And for all the improvements that you keep insisting China has achieved, may I remind you that personal freedom and human rights have only consistently deteriorated in the past 20 years? Personal privacy and freedom of the press in particular has suffered the most, although the Internet and several newspapers are putting up some good fights.

And lemme remind you once again -- human rights means so much more than the simple right to live. 畜牲 have 生存權, and they deserve animal rights as well. Humans, on the other hand, deserve so much more than just 生存權, so don't give me your usual bs.

While Ah Bien's corruption scandal is certainly known worldwide, his downfall is equally well-known. More importantly, his downfall and his verdict are the testament of democracy at work.

What happen to corrupt officials in China? They only get shot down for their corruption as a result of losing in power struggles. Is Jia Bao's jewelry-loving wife not suspicious for her wealth? Is 胡海峰 (Old Hu's son) not suspicious in his company's international corruption scandal?

作者: myversa    時間: 2009-10-8 07:37

You mxrxn, there is no corrupt official in China.  China is the most technological country in the whole world.  Without Chinese government the end of world will be coming because the economy will crumble.  China has the most human rights because they install software on our computer to protect us from bad things.  They think for us so we do not worry about thinking.

btw, how to argue with someone who is so brainwashed?

People have to know what their shortcomings are instead of thinking "we are doing the right thing so we do not have to change.." and try to overcome and improve.

Even Peter did not say China is all good but he failed to see the bad side of it; Making excuse of it and never wanting to face it.
作者: B2L2    時間: 2009-10-8 09:15

This thread started off saying that racist is wrong.  And some commented that Chinese generally is being more racist than other, which obviously is worse by our standard.  The question being asked was "what made those Chinese think that they are better than other people, so that they think looking down other race is okay?".

Peter, being so nice, listed so many points saying that China isn't the best yet (improving which nobody object).  He also listed how worse India, Africa and Taiwan compare to China.  So all in all from Peter, (1) China is improving, (2) Chinese should be proud of their improvement so far, (3) deconstructive comments to Chinese is not welcome, (4)..

But which Peter's point is relevant to answer the orig question?  Honestly, you're on the downhill battle since no Chinese should be racist, no matter how good they are and how proud they are.  Stating few facts here and there doesn't make your argument sounds especially they are off topic.

Anyway, now the topic being so side tracked and bent to said that the few of us here are racist against the Chinese.  I don't see where we are racist against Chinese (your racism's definition looks diff than the real meaning).  I don't hate Chinese since we are Chinese.  We are just taking about individual Chinese "here" or in HongKong who acted not on par to the standard we currently live in.

Am I totally not racist?  Definitely not and I do realize that.  However, I am trying to improve on that everyday.  What made positive criticize bad in any form?

Mr Peter here demonstrated a prime example. He doesn't walk the talk at all. First off, he calls people names and gets offensive by personal attacks. Then, he addresses our views by bringing in technology yet, ignores other things we mentioned such as lots of racist comments and name callings that Chinese in general give to other skin colors. Hmmmm...name calling...wait a minute, that sounds familiar...now, who does it?

Seriously, if your attitude was civil and showed some respect, we might just have a positive change of view. But the way you talk has nothing more then negative impact!
This post isn't about which country is stronger, has better technology. We are talking about people's attitude here! You just set a great example!

Being rude and try to be convincing doesn't convince anyone anything! If you want to win an argument, you have to reasonable, respectful of others opinions and give realistic examples. By then, you still may not win but WHY the hell would you want others to think like you anyway?

As we take a look at other cultures around the world, the people in general are proud of their culture and native country, whether their country is rich or poor, and in good times and bad times. Those people who are proud of their culture and native country only when their country is "as good as the west" are just opportunists. So it kind of odd to see some people here who think like that.

Look, most countries are not "as good as western countries". Does that mean most people have to be ashamed of their culture?
As in the case of China, it is making rapid improvements. No one is saying all is good or that there are no problems. The Chinese government itself has acknowledged there are still many problems that need to be addressed. For those LYKs who think I am not aware of these problems in China, I have to say that is just a baseless claim. I just pointed out that these problems are not unique to China at all. But some prejudiced people just like to pick on the Chinese as if only has these issues.

But what I do know is, just from reading this one post, you make Lik gor so much of a better person than you! Simpily because he's not childlish by name calling and personal attacks!

OH, suggestion for you. Moving forward, before you reply, you should read your posts again so you won't be caught sticking your foot in your mouth.

Myversa ..  no la..  I don't like to read those "ANTI-CANADA" and "ANTI-NON CHINA" stuffs .........

What is the point? I just hate double standard ...

And from what I notice, those "MOR_N" just want to win arguement here ..  but then, who are they when they are back to REAL LIFE?

Sigh .....   ( actually, I do feel sad about mr. H ...  he is a billionaire in the internet world .. but afterall? )

I only read it when I was bored.  I do not think so far there is anyone who is real anti except those two la.  I sometimes just want to improve my debating skill so I replied them.  I guess I still have long way to go.

Myversa, you are not a loser. Losing an argument doesn't make you a loser. You can participate in a debate civilized and respectifuly.

haha, I never said I am a loser.  I just want to improve my debating skill so I can apply in real life too.  Therefore, I was using them as my testing objects in a way.  Haha.  I forget all about it once I close the browser.
