i used to work at a dental clinic... depending which type of filling they use for you, the length of time that it would last is different... white fillings has a shorter life than metal fillings.

meow, if u want i can refer u to where i used to work a small clinic but the dentist is quite good.

old filling fell out, may mean there's recurrent caries. if that's the case, after you remove the caries, there will be less tooth structure left than before, thus more difficult to incorporate retention to the new filling. so even though it's the same tooth, the situation may have changed. you can't just compare 10 yr vs. 1 yr. but yes, normally, a well done restoration should not break in 1 yr.

Well yeah, I do not think it should be a normal practice that the fillings would felt off after a year. And it is scary that it felt off in a few small pieces.

I know a very good dentist.. she's chinese, I think is "Dr Lai", in Coquitlam Centre. There're two dential clinic there and it's the one near Futureshop. She's very good, and have a PhD in dental. It took me a hour to drive there one way but I tired 3 dentists in my area and they all do bad job.

I had a filling done a few years ago, and it fell of in a couple months. The dentist told me that it is possible, and she said it was because the "hole" was too big.  So, I ended up doing an inlay (which costs me a few hundred dollars). But I still felt sore so the dentist ended up doing a root canal and crown. It costs me like $800 or sth. This is WITH insurance coverage. I felt ripped off, but what can you do. I guess I just felt like I didn't have expertise to challenge the dentist.

yeah... I went back there, and the dentist said I need to do a root canal and crown too.
i am not sure, I dunt wannt pay that much of money since I am still in school.
I am going to check out other dentist...

yes, crowns cost a lot. coz it's custom made for you. and a lot of the money goes to the lab fee. and the materials used to make the crown is expensive. (don't know what kinda crown you have, but the metal ones are made of precious metals like platinum, gold...etc) and anything custom made costs a lot more than pre-fabricated stuff, just like custom made clothes will cost more than regular clothes.

if need root canal and crown, sounds to me that there's not enough tooth structure left to hold the filling. but by all means, get a second option if u need to. u can ask the dentist to duplicate x-rays images for u, so u don't have to retake radiographs in the 2nd dentist's office. but the original dentist may charge u duplication fee. (or u take the originals to the 2nd dentist, ask the 2nd dentist to return them back to original dentist after use)

are duplicate radiographs (non-digital) diagnostic??

well, depends on how good the originals are. if the originals weren't v. good to begin with, then the duplicates will only be worse.  depending on individual cases, the dentist can make the call whether those images are good enough or not.

It seems dental lab. is a decent business. Do you have any idea how big is the portion of the money goes to the dental lab? Is it bigger than the portion which the dentist get?
作者: bbqfish    時間: 2009-10-18 09:35

lab fee.. roughly 30-50% depends on what u do.
then the dentist has to pay the rent, and staff...
so about 30% goes into dentist's pocket.

Dentist is at the top of the dental team, it is no doubt he earns the most.  They are the most educated of the dental team (I supposed), it is reasonable for them get the most of the money. If a patient needs a crown, he pays $1000(for example, I have no idea) to the dentist. According to your information, the lab gets about $300 to $500. That means in some occasion, the lab gets half of the money.
It is not bad at all. how to get into this occupation? Do we need a degree or second degree?
作者: bbqfish    時間: 2009-10-18 16:25

ya. lab gets about 30-50%... but the material is expensive like i said. it's precious metal after all. so lab tech earns the 30% minus the cost of the metal. and it takes time to make a good one. esp when u r a newbie. more experienced lab tech can do things much faster. how to be a lab tech? i think VCC has a program...
and yes, dentist should earn more money than lab ppl. spend so many yrs in school and so much $ for tuition.
