How do you convince yourself that you will wait for something that you really want?
e.g. waiting to graduate, waiting to go on the trip you have always wanted to go on, waiting go buy a house, waiting to buy your dream car, waiting to meet your mr/ miss right, waiting to get married, waiting for that parcel to arrive from half way across the world, waiting for an item you want to buy to go on sale...... etc

and what do you in the mean time to relieve your waiting? esp when it's a long term thing (like a few years)?

The best lesson I learned is to plan.

i.e. give yourself a time limit for your target.  If you don't make X(target) by Y (time), then what's the other options?  Can you live without X?

Setting the time limit itself is entirely subjective.  The hardest part is to conquer your emotions so that you can follow your plan rationally.

patience...something you learn/get used to when you get older and older...

。。後果。。。

Look from other side of the world, that is,  they are waiting for you.
