急症室兩拒收華婦猝死未及時驗出A流感家人擬興訟

烈治文華裔女子馬美莉原本打算明年與未婚夫共諧連理，可惜天不從人願，馬美莉雖然因呼吸困難兩度去到烈治文醫院急症室求診，但院方都說她無礙可以離開，最後她因心臟不適而緊急送入醫院，惜搶救無效離世，死後院方才確認她是因A流感（H1N1）喪生，成為卑詩省過去一星期再有8人死於A流感的其中一人。死者與前夫所生的女兒，指母親死前48小時內兩度到烈治文醫院急症室求診卻遭遣回，明顯是院方醫療疏忽，正考慮延聘律師控告醫院。
溫哥華沿岸衛生局回應本報查詢時表示，衛生局已經展開內部調查。
馬美莉生前住在烈治文，她22歲的大女兒容麗恩周二對本報表示，她母親幾年前患上哮喘（asthma），每天都有噴藥，上月31日母親出現呼吸困難等徵狀，噴了藥還是沒有改善，隨即由母親的未婚夫陪同下，去到烈治文醫院急症室求診，怎料僅等待一個小時，院方就說無礙而叫馬美莉回家。
容麗恩說，到了第二天，她母親再感到不適，除了呼吸困難還有發燒、鼻塞等徵狀；致電911後，由救護車送往烈治文醫院救治。「這次母親等候了接近6個小時，院方最後僅提供Tylenol藥物，就叫她回家」。
可是過了兩天，本月3日亦即上周二，馬美莉在柏文住所突然心臟不適，要第三度緊急送往醫院急救，延至當天下午2時左右終告不治。
第三度緊急入院後不治
容麗恩周二難過地說，母親兩次赴院求醫都出現明顯流感徵狀，如果當時醫院提供特敏福（Tamiflu）等治療流感藥物，或許母親不會死亡。她認為院方顯處理失當，「醫院當時應該做些事，如果做的話，這個不幸就不會發生」。
容麗恩又指出，父母親在6年前離婚，她和妹妹一起住在溫哥華。而母親死前與未婚夫住在烈治文，原打算明年結婚。今次不幸事件，令母親的未婚夫痛不欲生。
容麗恩透露，母親是土生的第二代中國移民，而父親則是香港移民。家屬認為醫院須要負上責任，正考慮聘請律師提出訴訟。
容麗恩回憶道，母親剛於今年9月25日慶祝51歲生日。死前一天，還打電話給女兒，說自己還沒有死，沒想到這卻是最後一通電話，之後完全沒有她的消息。直到母親死後兩天，家屬才獲知她死於A流感，而醫院也對此道歉。
醫院曾為事件道歉
容麗恩指出：「她（母親）生前根本不知道自己感染A流感，醫院也不知道，他們當時並未檢查就讓她回家。」
一位專門治療A流感的醫生孔瑪（Anand Kumar）指出，診斷哮喘病人是否感染A流感往往有困難，因為徵狀可能一時消失但隨後突然加劇。他表示，一旦哮喘病人出現其他類似感冒併發徵狀，一定要提高警覺。

我已經唔係第一次聽到呢間醫院因醫療疏忽而醫死人了~ 我聽過幾個類似既 case, 而家呢間醫院係有好多醫療疏忽的訴訟

由其住 richmond 的 LYK們, 愛你地既朋友, 家人同你自己, 有事的時候如果可以選擇不如開遠少少車去其他醫院吧

。。犧牲了睡眠但都係得個吉。。。但係屋企有老人真係無咩辦法﹐半夜他唔舒服唔送他去又好似好殘忍﹐很無奈

haven't heard winning case in BC or even Canada like "院方顯處理失當" to win huge $! Lots of excuses and BS when times come! If say this case in the STATES will be totally different story! What can u do????

Sometimes, you will get faster service and more attention at walk-in clinics. May was well go to one first if it's not really emergency case (i.e. high fever/bleeding/heart attack...etc).
Some of them open till late.
I think there must be something wrong in this case. Wonder if the woman never had or knew that she had fever.
Cos a lot of doctors use fever as a guideline for flu detection. And her old breathing problem may have masked the actual cause of "hard to breath" from flu.

It needs a doctor to support you to sue another doctor. However no doctor will stand up for you to point the gun at other doctor. It happened to me long ago, I almost died because the doctor's negligence. I was in the IMC for ten days passed out. I went to the lawyer asked for help and lawyer said it is very difficult to sue the doctor. My case was rejected.

Here you pay big bucks, so quality service is expected.
So you have every right to sue if you don't get that.

However, in Canada, for such a cheap price, your rights are also limited.

our medical service is not free or only $50/month. our tax free day is in july, which mean more than half of our salaries gone to taxes. and part of our taxes are use to support our medical service.
americans have their private insurance companies to take care their medical plans, and we have our govn't to take care our medical plans. all services are paid by our money, so we do request quality service.

for something like this, it's not about the price you pay, it's about basic human right... medical care in canada is something that's basic and everyone gets it, regardless if it's cheaper here than the states or not... what makes Mae not as worthy of treatment as those who went and got treatment and survived H1N1? they both paid the same price. the point here is that the hospital staff was negligent in this case.

You can talk about human rights all day long but at the end of the day everything costs money.
There's a difference between having the right to do something and having the resources to do something.
Surely you can demand better services from the medical staff, but before that we need to raise your MSP premium by 400%, build more hospitals and pay the doctors twice as much.

Who doesn't need to pay taxes?

The truth is that services have to be limited to control cost. And don't blow things up by just looking at one rare incident. How many such cases do you see each year? Everybody makes mistakes. If you want full compensation for every single error the doctors make, your MSP premium goes up.

Just look at how much Americans pay for malpractice law suits

Medical specialties with the highest premiums include obstetrics and anesthesiology. Insurance premiums for some doctors in high-cost states can reach $200,000 per year

we all pay taxes, but how much you pay ar, americans tax free day is in april, which are months ahead of canadians.  don't tell me americans pay more tax than canadians ar. i just want to tell you, our medical service is not virtually free or $50/month.  we pay a lot to it, we should receive quality service as well.
yes, everyone makes mistake, but at least we shouldn't let the same mistake happene again.  investigation is necessary.  if it is not just an accident, her family should get compensation, which included money form govn't & the doctor own liability, or maybe suspend the doctor's license.  otherwise this may happen to somebody else, maybe someone closes to you.
so as what you said, those ones who involved in the bus accident shouldn't ask for compensation -->  bus fare will increase ar.

完全係間醫院問題!!

有晚半夜我婆婆唔舒服, 於是我地就車佢去一間叫 Royal Columbian Hospital 的急診室, o的service 真係差天共地呀
雖然好多人, 但我的等左1個鐘就有醫生 take care 我婆婆喇~ 以前我地o係 richmond hospital 要等 4 - 5 個鐘都唔緊要, 個醫生仲要俾好多說話你聽, 我地問佢問題, 佢就叫我地自己去 goggle 搵, 或者叫我地有時間多 D 去 library 閱讀有關醫療和手術的書籍

Royal Columbian Hospital 个急診室緊係快啦，金宝湯特登俾bonus佢哋搞到好好睇睇，等啲传媒讚佢哋有改善，啲人唔使輪候，实則係先送啲病人上樓，上咗樓未必即刻有房，冇房咪喺hallway等咯，至於原本留医嘅病人，好咗六、七成就嗱嗱臨要佢出院，將張床俾係ER上嚟嘅病人用，嗰啲出院嘅病人就要各安天命嘞，有啲病人出咗院好快又恶化或者翻发，咪又再call白車送返去ER排過隊上楼咯，恶性循环，真係唔使等！
