Nice to see businessmen give back to the community instead of just making money.

You fail to see the big picture, for example the free advertising from the media reporting this story. The word of mouth in the internet age is very powerful too, Facebook, tweeter, texting etc. The increase in volume also helps to keep their product fresh.

If that's their pure profit then it's not bad la...almost 10% of revenue.  Also, this is only a special deal at a certain time of the day.

Bravo for them!
I really hope that people will appreciate their goodwill and not take them for granted or expect even more. After all, they are a business and need to make a living and profit to sustain staying on business!

$4.50 is not an outrageously cheap price.  There's definitely profit, depending on how heavy the traffic is.

Retail stores like Walmart regularly use sale items to attract customers. Bars have wing night. Chinese restaurants give out bonus crab dishes.

This is a good marketing scheme.  Even they might really think for the students but this also attracts a lot of customers.  If they do not hire any extra people, which labor is the most expensive cost in Canada, they should be able to cover and make small profit.

A special lunch meal is not exactly a loss leader.  You wouldn't go to a bar just to have the wings and you can't have the bonus dish at a Chinese restaurant if you don't order their combos.
