How much do you think they earn?

What do you think of the "status" of their profession? (e.g. Compared to Doctors, Lawyers, Dentists etc)

What do you think their job duty is like?

Have you heard of any of the "professional" accounting titles?

They are professional ..

depends on what grade ..

In general .. CA make app. same money as doctor here .. of course, depends on experience .. and field.

If in HK.. then people will consider accountants as HIGHER grade professional .. as they make more money then doctor/lawyer etc .. ( of course Plastic doctor, or surgery/cancer specialist in private hospital make good $$ too )

Not sure about here ... but yes, there are different titles for accountant in HK

I think CA does not make too much here...compare to HK or Toronto...Vancouver is not like a major financial city....
Career-wise...besides accountant...can be Financial analyst, corporate controller, CFO.... etc...

Seem to be nice and sincere for the first meeting, then send all the work to their "juniors" to get done, seem super busy and very difficult to get contact afterward, slow working progress, but send their secretary to remind you to pay on time!

i like those cpa ads, are they really cpa ads or people make joke at it. a dest. accountant can make from $40K+. is really depends on the size of your co. and your job duty. and your working hours can be from 8 - 16hrs/day.

If 40K to start with, a junior program can make that much too...
But accounting requires lots of studies...lots of exam...(to go for the CA, CPA, CGA, CMA title)

$40K for a cga who is working at a chinese small-mid size company in van couple years ago. well $45K the most now. her problem is she can't speak much english. title is important, but doesn't mean everything.

It's sort of in the middle of the road. It's definitely a professional field but at the same time a certification is only like an entrance ticket, and you need so much more to pick the plum, unlike other upper professional jobs like MD or JD where a title is pretty much all you need.

Another problem is dilution. You have so many competing professional institutions and at the end the profession just gets watered down. The profession would be a lot more respectable if CA (or CPA) is the only professional title for an accountant.

From what I heard, CMA is the best right since they are doing managerial accounting?
A friend who is studying CMA told me the order of prestige is ranked like this.
CMA >CGA >CA

I think CA is not a popular title right? Seems like CMA and CGA are much more popular and recognized.

Which again goes back to my original comment. If you filter out the bottom 2/3 of the "accountants", then the profession can probably be way up there.

It's very easy to tell whether a designation is more prestigious or not. You just look at its members, and the time/intelligence/effort it takes to obtain the designation.

I think that for Rich people, the more important thing is that they understand how accounting working, they understand the "language", and the facts reflected by the numbers.

Not here ... most of my accountant friends .. prefer BMW .. they like the "young professional style" over "old chinese c9" style .. LOL

Also, my CMA friends said all his colleagues (all analysts doing costings) are also CMA who got their title while working.
If CA is really better, I am sure he would have studied that at his company instead.

check those international companies website and see what titles do their management people earned, you will know which one is better

It just like doctors' case.. Doctors Specialists earn much more than regular family doctors. Family doctors with their own clinic earn more than doctors who work for others.

It all depends. CMA who are working in those Top Worldwide 50 companies as a CFO still earn more than CA who provide services to local people.

May be different in US .. but in general .. I won't say DOCTOR in Canada are low pay .. ( well, unless $200K+ is considered low pay )On the other hand, only SOME accountants in Canada make big money, but in general, ~ $50+/hr for a CA is still better then MOST ..

基本上加拿大大部份會計工作(audit除外)都會聘請CGA/CMA/CA﹐所以你讀咩都好﹐其實都可能做同一份工。有D工$40K﹐有D工$80K﹐有D工$120K﹐因人而異。所以你問accountant揾到幾多錢﹐其實三個可能都差唔多。當然﹐唔同survey有唔同result。點解? 唔同province個比率唔同﹐member多少亦不同。

但係我想講係﹐你讀醫諗住喺醫院做大醫生但係都可能唔及一個牙醫賺得多。所以唔好咁執著啦。

we have so many clients that are doctors and earn way more than dentists..
of course, doctors don't just work for hospitals, they might have their own practice, they might go around doing lectures & earn $$$, they might write papers & be paids by different institutions..

You have misinterpreted my statement. I have no idea how much a doctor makes in general, my point was that while some dentists make more money than doctors, some doctors may make more than dentists. Their titles do not necessarily represent their income potential - just because dentists are usually seen as less prestigious.

Teaching and other side jobs are beside the point, because dentists can easily teach/ invest/ own family business to make extra money on the side.

ps* If you have difficulty comprehending my Chinese I would like to re-state my original response to the topic to avoid further misinterpretation: an accountant's earning potential is not limited to his/her choice of professional designation, it has more to do with the job title and the corresponding industry.

I did some research. The salary surveys also show breakdown by each province.
There are very very few designated individuals who earn less than 40k.

Moreover, I also disagree with regarding that there is no difference in the designation that you choose since some jobs require you to have a specific designation.
