Chinese New Year……by the numbers?

You stupid moron, it is the western media that have been claiming, that China's aging population will be a problem for economic development in the future, while India's surging population will allow India to overtake China. I don't totally agree with that point of view, mainly because the western media is clearly touting India against China, out of jealousy of Chinese rapid improvement and in an attempt to bash the Chinese.

I do not see anything Lik said that is bashing Hong Kong in this thread.

What he said was kind of truth: which country has the most population does not mean the success for that country.  People within that country have to united and start to do learn to not to do things that would make shame of their country.

LOL~

If you have any common sense at all, you can foresee how the One Child Policy is gonna affect every single aspect of life in China. The policy started in the 70's, so assuming that a couple have their kid some time between 25 - 30 (my estimate is already conservative -- actual age should be much younger than that), the oldest generation with a single child is around 60 - 65, with their children being 35 or younger. As they leave the work force and go into retirement, how is society gonna cope with that? Where do you find the expertise to replace their experience? Who is gonna support their retirement? How will the (already flawed) healthcare system accommodate them when these people start losing their health due to old age? Who is the moron when he can't even foresee any of this?

We all know why Lik is bashing Hong Kong, because he is just jealous of HK's success.

Success? How "successful" has Hong Kong been since the reunification? SARS, avian flu, Asia financial crisis, widespread discontent among citizens, continual shift towards an M-shaped society in terms of wealth with the highest Gini coefficient in the developed world. And I haven't even delved into other more important issues. Do you call this success?!

You stupid moron, Hong Kong is one of the most successful places in the world these days. During the Asian financial crisis, most other Asian countries, except China, did worse than Hong Kong. The financial crisis started in places like Korea and Thailand etc.
Very soon, Hong Kong will announce their budget surplus for the year, when most other countries (like the US, Japan, many countries in Europe) are either bankrupt, or heavily in debt and run big budget deficits. In the US, they have 20% of their property owner that owe more than their property is worth, also known as "negative equity".  Over a hundred banks in the US went bankrupt last year.
In Canada, the PM is so scared about the budget deficit that he prorogated the parliament. For India, they could not even afford to buy matching uniforms for their Olympics team. How are they going to solve their illiteracy problem?

LOL~ I can't believe you are trying to distort historical facts now. Is that what they teach you to do at the 10 cents club training school?

During the Asia Financial Crisis, Hong Kong was one of the **LAST** places in the region to climb out of the recession because of the SAR government's steadfast refusal to unpeg the HK dollar from the US dollar. The result was massive deflation that lasted a lonnnnnng time, and regular citizens in Hong Kong suffered tremendously. It wasn't until 老懵懂 went up to beg Beijing to authorize 自由行 when the local economy started creeping back towards a healthy state.

If you can't even get your historical facts correct, don't spew your nonsense around la.

Lik, you should get your facts straight now. It was because your British imperial government that didn't develop Hong Kong's hightech industry, unlike in Taiwan and Korea, that contributed to Hong Kong's situation during the Asian financial crisis. Anyway, countries like Korea and Thailand near went bankrupt during the financial crisis, while HK was able to maintain its financial stability.

Now, as one of the most successful cities in the world, Hong Kong runs a budget surplus, unlike the US, Japan, UK and most of Europe and Canada, which are either near bankrupt, or heavily in debt or running big budget deficits.

Of course you ignore the fact that, in the US, they have 20% of their property owner that owe more than their property is worth, also known as "negative equity".  More than a hundred banks in the US went bankrupt last year.

Depends on what do you mean by Success.  The success of a city doesn't mean only $.   It is all kind of aspects.  I'm not saying HK is not success. It is.  However, is it the "MOST"?  I doubt.   Every city has its own problem.    Down to the basic, city is built by people.  If the people within the city are happy and have a good living in general, then the city is a good city for its people.

Ya, the sky's falling in everywhere in the world except in Big China ar mah~ We know that's what you're gonna say la. And lemme tell you, any country can run a budget surplus as well if they do what the HKSAR government does -- handout unrealistically tiny amounts of funding to public and social services (such as healthcare, social support funds and programs), earmark chunks of money for aid programs to different industries and people so that the government looks good to the public, but when it comes time for people to actually apply for any of those, the requirements are super strict and basically impossible to qualify. So there is money left over, and the government can claim its surplus. And then it gets in bed with industry giants to funnel projects, land, and $$ into their coffers while leaving the poor to fend for themselves and rot.

It seems you are getting the point here. I understand that in Hong Kong their welfare program may not be as good. It looks like for most countries, they have to borrow money in order to pay out social welfare. When they go bankrupt in the future, they will then have to cut back their spending.
That is why, I don't think it is fair when you say Hong Kong is not successful. Hong Kong is just practicing fiscal responsibility, instead of putting the burden on future generations. Hong Kong has US$230 billion of foreign reserves.

The money has to come from somewhere. Hong Kong can spend big on social welfare if they just run deficits and borrow more money. But the would be irresponsible.
