http://www.mingpaovan.com/htm/News/20100309/vas1h.htm

Yes I agree, they should teach their cashiers to save the bags first.  Sometime they just put one milk/soy drink in one bag.

Does that meant they will start to charge the clear bags for vegetables and fruits too?

They save cost in bags
Don't have to be responsible if the bag poorly...leading eggs to crack, glasses break, raw meat leaks, etc.

Exactly!
I know it's because of health issues. But since they seem like not concerning to put everything in one recycle bag, why they should have to worry to separate different stuff in that many unnecessary plastic bags in the first place?! Does it imply, once the customer BYOB, they have no more liability? (not merely pointing to TnT, but also many other stores)

I worked in Safeway as a cashier. Their policy is to put non-food items in a seperate bags incase of chemical leaks or anything toxic. Eggs and breads are ALWAYS to be bagged seperately. Some customers DO come back for a refund becasue of the baggage issues that lead to things being broken or conteminated.

Chinese grocery stores in general are not sensitive about health issues. Otherwise, they won't continue to sell expired items or have poor food handling. Just think of how many times you've seen them clean their scanners! All kinds of fish, meat juice on the scanner before they scan your ready-to-eat bread! back to topic. So now that if you bag your own grocery, they don't have to be liable. If the eggs break in your own bag, that's your problem. Saves them time and money too.

I am curious though. General public bag slower than the cashiers and may sometimes grab someone else's stuff (intentionally or not). Even with superstore that has long dividers and huge bagging area, congestion can still happen. I wonder about T&T...

Things like: to separate different goods in different plastic bags as health concern as well as to avoid liability, encourage customers to use their own recycle bags for environmental care but at the same time they don't care about health issue anymore.

To solve this problem is simple (maybe a little more costly), use biodegradable plastic bags.

I think plastic bags or not, it's a matter of habbit.  It may sound like a drastic measure, but if supermarkets no longer supply any plastic bag, people will have to adjust by bringing their own bags.  From an environment stand point, this will be the most effective method to elimiate pastic bags use.  However, the same cannot be said from a customer service stand point: "what happens if the customer did forget to bring their own bag and they're taking a 30 mins bus ride home?"  A realistic transition has to be implemented, but seriously, saving the earth is everyone's responsibility, we can't always blame the government/businesses when we haven't done our part.  Look at the weather these years! When was the last time you saw cherry blossoms in February?

Yes I agree it's a habit for some people. But how about Costco? They don't provide an option to buy their plastic bag at all, customers already expected and planned how they should take their own goods on travel.
An alternative option for a temporary grace period could be, no more plastic bags will be provided even customers won't mind to pay extra money to buy, but only recycle tote bags can be sold.

作者: news    時間: 2010-3-9 14:30

well..even they provide plastic bags at costco..with the size they sell on most of the items...it will cost them a lot of money just on providing the plastic bags

for t&t..it sounds more like offsetting the cost for purchasing the plastic bags on their side rather than helping out the environment since theirs bags are supposed to biodegradable already...and 2 cents a bag is really a joke..it wont stop most ppl from getting a bag

I worked at T&T as a cashier before so I can answer your question....
they never taught cashier how to bag items
so yeah, like ultraman said some cashiers just bag according to their own "categories"
Why wasting so many bags? two answers
1) the cashier is stupid
2) the customer is weird

I was one of those cashiers who tried to save bags (but of cuz when I see something like fish, I will not put them together with bread la)
once, I was putting a box of egg into a bag, then put a small bag of bread on top of the box of egg
the customer complained to me that the BREAD will BREAK the egg
and of course I would not want to argue with the customer, so I was very 無奈地 separating the 2 into different bags

for me when I was a cashier
I did not have a problem with people putting multiple numbers of fruit/veg in the bag
but one orange one bag, one apple one bag, one pear one bag would be 有點兒那個......

and I had seen customers putting their stuff into the veggie plastic bags (like one item/bag) because they think the tranporting belt on the counter is dirty (but not like they are eating the packaging la, I don't know what they were thinking about) and I hate that. Having something over the barcode is very hard to scan. I always had to end up pulling the item out of the bag to scan then putting them bag, whcih is a waste of time

I went to TnT twice this weekend.  I brought my own bags both times.

For the first time (1st Ave), the store was busy, the cashier did not help me to put the item into the bags.

However, in my second visit (metro), it was early and the cashier offered to help me to bag the items.

tofu, you should always use veggie baggies, even for your meats. Just pay attention to their scanners. They are filled with bacteria from meat, seafoods, all kinds of stains, even non food products! Recycling is good intention but getting food poisioned and your food cross conteminated is very serious! For meats, puting them into the plasic bags for checking out is also protecting others from your wet packages too. The meat dept always put the bag directly on top of the raw meats while scooping your meats inside the bags. I hate it!!!! Their gloves already dirty will serve you and the next next next....customer, plus touching everything else.
Another thing that I do is get the cashier to clean the scanner first. They don't like it though.

If you choose not to use the plastic bags for your fruits, meats, etc. Make sure you wash them very very clean before consuming.

I usually get my veggies and fruits from a veggie store. So the chance of getting contamination is lower. They are fresher there too.

We know that Loblaws owns T&T but they said that T&T business will run "independently" and "will be the same" when that happened. So, it's possible for them to decide not to charge bags for T&T. Anyway, I think this discussion has nothing to do with new or not. I use my own shopping bag way before store charging env fee for bags.
