no... it's just to show that they can afford expensive dishes...
If the soup base is done right soup can be as tasty without shark fin. Shark fin doesn't really add any favor to the soup.

to make this whole thing to work ... the restaurants need to invent the next $$$ dish which is environmentally friendly to replace sharkfin soup.  if it's not $$$ then it's a shame for a lot of Chinese families.  May it be the King Crab?

it's the "you are cheap without sharkfin soup" perception we need to battle against.

Yes, peer pressure. Actually, at a wedding, it's more like parents pressure. Just like with other things such as using chinese style or wester wedding or using rounds or long tables, we don't often have a saying on...
Parents, even they support your decision not to eat shark fins, they will have to face their family friends/guests' questioning and possibily be the talk for many years to come! So i totally understand for most traditional chinese families how hard it is to give up this tradition....

Maybe another decade ba?

I think it's more like a combination of culture, peer pressure, and maybe show off too. More or less having shark fin in wedding banquet is a "must" in many Chinese people's mind. It's something like our traditional tea ceremony, it seems like a "must" too. That's why they try to educate the younger generations now, hope it works.

I think it's a good start regardless. Stop it one bowl and one restaurant at a time... It will take years to get it but... every bowl counts!
I just hope this will eventually get to bigger Chinese restaurants. And I am hoping that famous chefs will create tasty and exquisite dishes to replace that "position" of shark fin soup.

btw... shark doesn't really like to eat ppl... They attack some ppl (which the rate isn't really high...) cos they mistaken them as fish or seal. I don't know why we think that human being is tastier than other meat.

Personally, it was harder for me to give up bluefin tuna (which I did) than shark fin.

Just to clarify, I do start the topic with parents that eating sharkfin is not good...And you don't want to know how badly the conversation ends. But I do tell her to order less portion. Picture shows my mom's "bowl", which I had a spoon of it.

zuesel, it is not about taste and it is beyond 愛護動物 too, it is about 生態環景, shark is at the top level of their food chain, if we over hunt sharks, the food chain will be broken. ALL living creatures depends on the ocean to survive (directly or indirectly) if the food chain broken, the ocean will be screwed, so it is a bigger problem then you can imagine.

I agree it's not the right timing to preach the people while they are enjoying their food. It's like if a vegetarian keep on telling me how bad eating meat is when I am eating my steak, I am sure I want to kill him too!

I support not eating shark fin, but we have to work on it step by step, don't be aggressive. What I can do now:

1. I don't eat shark fin, I don't order anything with shark fin
2. I kindly refuse to eat food contains shark fin if someone order it
3. Tell my friends and family I don't eat shark fin and the reason why
4. Showing support for friends who don't eat shark fin.

Yes, I don't usually go on and on about not eating shark fin.
I just tell the server to scoop one less bowl or put mine up in the lazy susy (not sure if that's the name or the round rotating thing) and tell ppl that there is an extra bowl.

If someone ask, I will just tell them that I don't eat shark fin cos they are near extinction.
The only time that I had a longer chat about it was because another friend of the bride and groom whom happened to sit next to me didn't eat shark fin too. So we had some conversation about it among the 2 of us... (not trying to annouce it to the whole table)

embarrassing guests isn't really my goal...

I have no special preference on eating the shark fin. but I think extinction of species are part of the nature.  The world ends is part of the nature as well.  Extinction of one specie might help other species to grow as well.  You should only do so much to interfere the nature.

If you are really into the idea of eating responsibly, then you should only eat farmed stuff, instead of anything natural.   Like, you should only eat farmed(chemically enhanced) salmon instead of other kind of salmon.  Everything you eat should be farmed.  But at the same time, you should think about these farmed food, they should be let go as well, they have their will to live instead of being stuck in a small tank or area.

Bird's nest is more a "belief" remedy,
it is true that it is high in protein, but you can get protein elsewhere.
The University of  Boston Medical School has done a 5 years study on
Chinese medicine, and the result is that the contain very little nutrient
other than protein. A standard dose of bird nest would be equivalent to
the protein from 3 regular eggs without the cholesterol.
Yes, the rich C9 would claim that eating  it would keep them young

I found it taste like bird.. I acutally don't like the smell of bird from it.
May be the one I had wasn't high quality enough. (never eat those from the jar)

I think bird nest has no taste. That's why need to go with almond or coconut juice or with papaya.
I just "hope" to have good skin gee mah!!!

I don't cook it myself la...my friend does. He said that the "cooking" part is easy...the "cleaning part" (i.e. picking the feather) is not difficult either...just time consuming.

Did you watch any movie or video about shark fining before you comment ah? People cut off all the fins from the sharks and throw the leftover bodies back into the water and let them sitting on the bottom of the sea wait to die. Do people take the abalone off from the shell and cut off the skirt of the abalones and throw them back into the water?

I know how they did to the shark. Let me ask you a question, do u eat beef/pork/lamb?
People killing them in the so-called 仁慈 way, but if u like eat those meat, will u still like to observe how does a goat, pig, cow have their throat got cut-off?

I wonder if anyone here eat geese liver. the way the farmer treat the geese for their livers are not any better than people treating the sharks. I feel strange that no 食肉的愛心人士 here come out and speak for the geese

Back in 80's, live abalone was so cheap($4.00 per pound) in Vancouver,
the Chinese cleared the market, lead to the almost extinct of the species
and it became illegal to catch abalone in BC.  30 years elapsed and the
damage has not recover. It was caused by Asian, mostly Chinese.
In fact, I think Chinese is the only race obsessed with abalone, Japanese
use few abalone for sashima. The rest of the world? most people never
try in their lifetime.

maybe u didnt join the last "battle" about shark fin last time so u may not know what I prefer. let me tell u, I dont agree that we should get the shark-fin in that cruel way. what about.....keeping the shark as live-stock? or consume the whole shark and give them a "quick one" when we take them?

Do you guys know that part of the problem is about the rate they catch and kill the sharks? (cos they only take the fin, so one boat can hunt hundreds of shark vs less than 100) And how slow shark grows? Because of lack of regulation/re-enforcement, some boat even hunt in the ocean reserve area. So if "free" hunting is an option, do you think anyone (if that's even possible) would consider farming them?

Studying of shark is still limited and because of their scary image, it's harder to get funding to study and protect them. (vs Panda and dolphins)

Yes, I don't like how cruel they cut the fin and let the shark drown and die. But the problem is about how wasteful this fining process is. And catching rate vs shark growing and recover rate.
Think of sea turtles legs.... what if they suddenly becomes a popular cuisine.

If they can farm abalone without seriously damaging the enviornment, I don't mind having that at wedding banquet.

chunsh 發表於 2010-3-30 06:17

chunsh, cool down sin la. The way fining shark fin is different to killing other animals for meat, people just cut off the fins from sharks and leave them to die in hours and days, cow & sheep & chicken etc die in seconds. Another thing is the food chain, for how many shark being killed will break the chain, and for how many cow and chicken being kill will? People only challenge those people feel passion and mercy on particular species of animals but not others. But they don't think about it in another way, actually it's for our own human sake, we want to keep our earth in shape longer. People have freedom to keep eating shark fin, not turning off power in earth hour day, keep paying dollars for buying plastic bags at shop instead of BYOB etc. I cannot do anything, I just do what I feel it's better, to myself and to the earth jeh.
