As suggested, I will post my reply with a new topic
From friend's experience:
9/10 have +ve feedback on making dresses for their bridesmaids, but they would not take the risk making their own gown in china, simply because no guarantee on the final product, no fitting wor, there might be thousands of designs which are pretty, but doesn't mean they suit everybody. No turning back after getting the gown and find it looks not as good as you imagine.
Except you're looking for very simple style, otherwise if I were the bride I wouldn't risk it.
Making chinese cheung sam or qua is good though...作者: claichan 時間: 2010-3-29 12:29
I had extremely poor experience making my dresses in China
.
We even got in a fight with the tailor on the street about the dresses. They can promise you anything, but the outcome is a totally different story.
They first said 1 fitting then it's ready to go the next time. So I picked the fabric and they did the measurement, booked the fitting date for the first time I was there. On the fitting date, everything is not right on all the dresses, like 左右不對秤, chest is completely flat, not curve cutting (not because of no pads), the sleeve is sticking up (literally), the train of the dress is on the side not at the back, etcetc. So I pointed them out. Went in the third time, the dress is not ready at all. So didn't argue too much, and decided to go in two days later instead. And obviously the dresses were not at all altered then. As I needed to fly back to Canada the next day, so I told them I'll sit there and wait for them. Waited for 4+ hours, but of course with their standard and 手工, the dresses were just piece of crap. They insisted they did a great job already or I could let them know what's wrong and they would fix them and refused to give us refunds on deposits, so we got in the fight.
anyhow, afterall, I only accepted the cheungsum and gave up the two dresses, and just took off, didn't pay the remaining balance (of course I also didn't get the deposits back for all dresses).
The cheungsum, I brought it to the tailor here in Canada, paid another CAD$200 to fix it.....so would you still want to make your dresses there.作者: tsumorichisato 時間: 2010-3-29 12:30
Exactly! Taste is the word. Sometimes doesn't mean the tailor didn't do a good job, but many times it's difficult to communicate and tell him/her how you want your dress to be, and your "elegant" may not be = to the tailor's "elegant". I can imagine how bad it can be.
Many aunties they like to make their chinese cheung sam in China because they have more fabric choices, is that true? My sister made one she likes it a lot.作者: tsumorichisato 時間: 2010-3-29 12:52
Omg were those Mickey inside the fabric or just running around?!? Maybe they are owner's pets, don't panic lol作者: raima 時間: 2010-3-29 15:18
i think it's not worth the time and money to have your wedding gown made in china unless you get to see what is happening in every step and not just with 2 visit (to drop off a picture of what you want and explain; then to pick up the final product). it's very risky.
it's better if you purchase an already made gown if you find one that you like in china. but no guarantee if the fabric was once Mickey's blanket like tsumorichisato's story above.... lolz
as for cheung sam, i think they do a great job in china. lots of fabric to choose from. my mom was very impressed. she got lots of compliments too. don't know if that was luck or not. but those ladies are very pushy in sales.作者: 布小熊 時間: 2010-3-29 15:31
my friend had her cheung sam made in HK by a Shanghainese tailor. It was expensive (she didn't tell me how much) but it looks very good on her. (hug her curves very nicely)
She was too scared to get hers done in China and she didn't have enough time to go back and fore.作者: tequila 時間: 2010-3-29 15:39
it does take alot of time to go back and fourth to china and hk if u r making ur dresses there..... also u do need to expect alternations afterwards, and because my fiance's mom does alternations, so there wasn't the problem for his sister to make the dresses in china. and u also must tell them exactly what you want. she had made all her five dresses in china for around $800 CND.. and i believe she had sold her wedding gown here afterwards.
i guess it is better if you have a referral by someone instead... i just got my bridesmaid dresses and my mom's clothing for the day done... but i do need to get the bridesmaid dresses shorter and so im gonna get his mom to do it作者: fibbi 時間: 2010-3-29 16:35
In general, the problem of dealing with Chinese merchant...(and I found more and more HK merchant like that as well...) is that... 講就天下無敵, they promise you everything they can to get your business. Whether they can do it or not they don't care, since they already got your $ (deposit) or a chunk of money anyway.作者: Catpiano 時間: 2010-3-29 16:44
Oh .. I think you are taking about "Made in China" wedding dress ... then they are ok, I think most of the wedding dress here, are made in China anyway ..
However, buying in China, may be different story, if you will spend a lots of time in China, (for alteration, then should be fine...
Wedding gown .. need to alter many times ga ... (from the day u order the dress.. to your big day, could be 6 month .. )
Unlike man, wake up in the morning on wedding day, go to the closet, and pick whatever .. then iron them and go! 作者: chowB 時間: 2010-3-29 18:37
