《國際政治》泰鎮壓紅衫軍衝突激化,21死

    * 2010-04-12
    * 【時報-外電報導】

    泰國政府與「紅衫軍」的衝突十日急遽升高,軍方的驅離行動至今造成二十一人死亡,八百七十四人受傷,死者包括十七名平民與四名軍人。紅衫軍十一日下午在「五馬路」的民主紀念碑,為十六名死難者舉辦佛教儀式,誓言要求總理阿披實立即解散國會,下台出國,否則抗爭絕不停止。

Certainly your "out of self-interest" comment is true. Had LYK been a ethnic Thai's in Canada forum, the uproar would be huge.

That is not to say that the deaths were any less tragic. Unfortunately, there are too many demands in life that drains all of our time and energy. So when the ties are not nearly as close, we don't feel nearly as moved by the event, tragic as it may be.

The uproar with the HK high speed train is that many of us still maintain close ties with Hong Kong, be it relational (with people), cultural, or emotional. Because of these close ties, we feel ripped off ourselves when HK citizens are getting ripped off.

Certainly someone as intelligent as you are would know this?

I certainly have every reason to be jealous of Hong Kong's highspeed railway when every citizen has to pay HKD$10k for it as the cost of construction. In fact, I am extremely jealous of the superbly high quality of life that HK citizens currently enjoy, under the brilliant leadership of Bowtie Donald Tsang and his cronies~

You are not only jealous of Hong Kong's prudent financial management, but you are jealous of Singapore.
Singapore's standard of living and financial situation are way better than your Canada, which is in big debt at all levels of government. Of course Lik has to pay for the HST and to repay the debt for the bankrupt Canadian finances.
Singapore is another example that Canada needs to learn from.
So while Lik drives around in his stupid polluting car, Hong Kong people are travelling in efficient highspeed trains all over China.

數千名紅衫軍當天聚集國會大樓的鐵閘外,進一步向阿比希政府施壓,要求他宣佈解散國會,提前大選。

Your hypothetical question is completely meaningless and worthless. Given the land auctioning policies and the amount of influence land developers have in Hong Kong, real estate prices are not going to come down significantly any time soon. Additionally, as long as the Mainland's economy continues to grow (and Grandfather will do everything it can to make sure of that), hot money will continue to flow out of China to prop up the high end and mid-level (real estate) market in Hong Kong. The trickle down effect will then spread out to keep the whole real estate market afloat. And even if public housing is re-introduced, it'll take years before they can affect the market at large.

Now, if the World, US, or China suffers another major crisis of any form, then of course it's a different story.

Then I suppose the discussion on highspeed train was also completely meaningless and worthless, since it was already a done deal.

The issue is how the younger generation in HK these days simply look for free rides, rather than strive hard and try to become leaders.

From day 1, it was well understood by everyone that the protest and rallies against the HK high speed train project would only have the slimmest chance of succeeding. Legislatively, the SAR government and the Establishment side already has enough votes to pass the financial approval. The only piece of arsenal the public has on their side was public pressure and anger that carries a small chance of forcing the SAR government to do the right thing.

It was exactly the same in the July 1 marches in 2003 and 2004. Prior to the demonstrations, the public had little hope that their protest could produce any concrete results, but at the time, contrary to everyone's expectations, it did.

Even though the protests failed to put a stop to the high speed train project, the movement was successful in the sense that it vividly pointed out how shameless and deplorable the SAR government was, and more importantly, how despicable the functional constituency is. Aware for the widespread and structural injustice in Hong Kong has been raised and brought to the forefront. That alone is a small victory since it plants the seeds for further social activism and awareness, especially among the younger crowd.

LOL~

The US gov does as much to print the greenbacks as the PRC does to prevent the rise of the RMB. Both countries are doing this to prop up their economy, so what's the difference? And if there is no difference, then what's your point?

Have you even checked what the current real estate prices are these days? The average price paid for a home in BC is Cdn$517k, but it is safe to say that at that price, the provincial average size of that home is probably 2000+ sq-ft. Even in Metro Vancouver, $517k can probably get you something in the 1300 to 1500 sq-ft range. How big a place can HKD$4M (that's Cdn$517) buy in Hong Kong? 800 sq-ft?

The government does nothing to help ordinary people? When I was checking yesterday, the provincial government just announced a major infusion of cash into the hospitals to reduce wait times. And what have your PRC government done? Arrest activists that fight for poisonous baby formula cases?

You moron, the difference is that the US is bankrupt with $trillions of debt. The US is the borrower and China is the lender.
HK is a crowded place, and you know that. The per sq feet price for a home is normally higher in HK. But the per unit price here in Vancouver is sky high and the government is doing nothing here. In HK they have low taxes and public housing.

Here the government can only borrow money for health care. When are they going to reduce the deficit and pay off the debt? It is people like you who have to pay for the big debt at all levels of government.

What is the PRC government doing? It looks like another year of solid economic growth and rapid rising of living standards for them and millions more people are being lifted out of poverty.
