You should try the new PDK before you brought this old c4s imo but anyways since you already got it.

Price is alright, and I am sure you an find lot of info online.

While the PDK is awesome, it just isn't something as compariable to the experience with the stick.

My guess is I won't be driving a stick forever, so when the time comes.. I will be back to some kind of semi-auto.

So far, I have quite some fun with it.  My car has the PASM and Sport and PSM.

The PASM makes the suspension stiffer, which does provide me with more feedbacks, but then when it's in normal mode, it is so much more confortable than my STi.  The sport button change the throttle response, which make your car feels faster.., I can't say it's good to have it on all the time, but it makes the car more fun to drive with it on as well.  I tested with PSM off (Porsche Stability Managerment) this morning taking a slow speed corner which I do with my STi daily.  Finally, I can gain back the fun from my STi, which allows the back ends to losen a little.

Honestly speaking, I am not a good enough driver to share like those who track & autoX their cars monthly or at least few times a year.  But those are my experiences so far..!  And I plan on putting out a mini review once I get to know my car a little more.

My frd has a turbo 08 with manual and i drove his car for a day before i brought my C2S 09' PDK.  I would say PDK is a faster transmission and feels a lot better.  I used to drive a E46 M3 with manual was quite tired with it and very often i stuck in traffic.
My car has PASM too when PSM is off is a little scary since my car is not all wheel drive. It feels like the car was a little off balance when comes to corners.  But generally i think PDK is alot better than the old tiptronic and even the manual imo.
Maybe you should try the PDK sometimes and tell me how you feel about it. I think i'll go for a C4 or C4S when the new 911 comes.  Would be nice to have a C4S/turbo/turbo S with PDK. Anyways i think the manual wasn't too bad but not a everyday car for me.
作者: Catpiano    時間: 2010-8-4 17:07

PDK is better then manual and tiptronic ..

However, not mean the "best" fit tranny for everyone, just like 911 is not the best overall car in the world, people buy them since they want it.

Other than style can you name any other sports cars that has better performance/handling than the porsche 911 at its price?

Manual is good so as PDK but PDK is new and faster transmission. PDK is similar to the F1 transmission and gives better respones compare to the standard transmission. Also it's more ideal for everyday driving.

I'll only recommand people who can affort a PDK 911 to try it before they decide getting the standard transmission.

For stupid people who thinks PDK is "almost a must" for C9. Thats probably the funniest sh1t i've ever heard.  I know many C9 at the age of 50-60ish are still driving standard transmission.  Since automatic wasn't popular back 30+ years ago and peopke get used to the standard transmission.  The funny thing is that very often you see kids at age 17-25 have more speeding tickets/car crush than those C9. What a shame
If porsche mainly target PDK for C9. I guess it would be a shame to get the new GTR that comes with a STANDARD double clutch transmission.

Since you said (pdk) auto is "almost a must" for C9   Please tell me more about PDK when you actually have a "chance" to drive a 911 PDK.
作者: Catpiano    時間: 2010-8-4 20:29

Sigh ..  suen ba la..

This is EL's thread ..

I said "AUTO" is almost a must for C 9  .. not said PDK is a must for C 9, but since PDK/DSG/F1 shift etc is the only kind of "automate" tranny for sports cars .. so if a C 9 is buying a M3 or Porsche, they HV to pick DSG/PDK. (no TRADITIONAL auto now)

Again, I do agree PDK/DSG is a better/faster tranny, but is it more fun?  it depends, look at GT3/GT3 RS/GT2/GT2 RS, NO PDK! even with PDK, same car can be 0.2-0.3 sec quicker on straight, and 5 second quicker at the ring....

Just like C4S vs C2S, some prefer C2S, some prefer C4S.

Anyway, pass this back to EL, I dont want to steal his thread ..  even he doesn't mind.

Again, most people buy 911 is not for speed. ( ie: used 993 is MORE/AS expensive as used 997, and it is not faster, a good RS, still worth ~ $200K)

Davidcopperfeel 發表於 2010-8-4 20:05

How about something that is cheaper than the 911?

The Corvette ZR1 is much, much cheaper than the 911, but it is every bit as fast, and probably easier to handle at the limit than the 911 b/c of the 991's inherent imbalance.

Also, don't forget that the Cayman is a car intentionally crippled by Porsche to not beat out the 911. Equipped with an LSD, a Cayman S would be easily faster than a rear drive 911 in tighter courses.

Don't be a badge snob and think that Porsches are the be-all-end-all sports cars la~

I think u mean ZR1 is cheaper then 911 Turbo and GT3 ... but not cheaper then NORMAL 911... (about same as C2S / 4S loaded )  Z06 is something cheaper and faster then 911.

U don't need much on a Cayman S, for you and me, with Cayman S will hv better lap time ....

Yes, I don't mind at all.  I rather we have more LYK actively talking & sharing...!
Now back to my own topic.
I m not a car expert like many of you are, and speed is not the only factor I look at.  It all about driving experience, and to be able to enjoy driving it each time I enter into the car.  The C4S works for me.
For total performance, I can easily spend another $10-$15K on my STi, and turn it into a AWD beast.  Don't forget that I already had good aftermarket suspension on it.  But no matter what I do, I can't turn my STi into a convertible.  So, in order for me to find AWD, Convertible, 4 seated with relatively good performance (Handling, but not just), I think the C4S has it all.

Now, back to the PDK vs 6-speed.  I kind of know what to expect on the PDK, cuz my wife RDX has paddle shift, and I have been in my friend's Ferrari with F1 2 years ago.  It's not so much about speed, but it's too video game feels.  Driving a stick is all about perfecting my shifting, and heel-toe, rev match.  it's the involvement in driving.  I know I will have more fun driving a 200HP stick than a 400HP auto.  So, no GT-R for me.
It's true that I do get the bonus here in Seattle, where I do get to have alot more fun driving , instead of getting stunk in traffic.  I actually have a good mix of Hwy speed, on/off ramp, local roads with some twisty + up/down hills in my 30 mins driving To & From work.

Like I said before, I know I will eventually have a car that would be using some sort of advance auto tranny, but the time is not right now...!

My Wish:  I will have a daily drive stick or auto inexpensive fun car to drive, the 2nd would be a Ferrari with F1

$130000 Corvette ZR1 is much much cheaper than 911?
Porsche has better stability/handling/connection between the road and driver which ZR1 can never achieve. For high performance sports cars are not just about the "speed". Even a low price STI can be really fast but thats totally different when compare with the 911 series.

911 customers are paying for the quality not just the " Porsche badge " not just the speed and not just the appearence. Is the "Overall driving experience" we're talking about. For its price i think only GTR might be more close when comes to handling and quality of driving experience.

Simply watching videos/playing video games won't give you the actual feeling of a Porsche.

The people who own a 996/997 before should know what im talking about and for those who never drove a 911 before can never understand the "driving experience"

Cayman S is more than a poor man's 911.

Didn't check your last post anyways we have similar thoughts.
Porsche - Quality driving experience.

PDK is different than just paddle shifting and don't get me wrong i like the standard too but thats not an ideal everyday drive for me.  I would like to have a manual for my Second car and PDK/similar transmission for everyday drive.
Anyways all im saying is try out the PDK when you have time and see how it feels maybe you'll like it or maybe not. Thats a very personal preference but many of my frds with manual cars likes the PDK after driving my car around.

Davidcopperfeel 發表於 2010-8-5 02:10

That part, yes, totally agree, 911 is a RR car to start with, can hardly touch MR layout ..  it is amazing how Porsche's  engineer can make the 911 "right".

I already explain for Lik about the ZR1/Z06 pricing, and you are right, 911 is not just about speed nor track performance, but the overall experience, that is why, some people pick manual, some pick PDK. (Tip before)

It is very true that Vancouver market, MCL sells more PDK 911 then manual 911 now, don't get me wrong, and again, PDK/DSG etc are great gear box, not just because it is quicker to do 0-60mph, but super fast downshifting as well, but will get boring soon compare to manual. (esp with short shift)

Again, doesn't matter if Lik is driving a Miata, he may or may not be able to afford a used Cayman, no big deal. I do know someone who has few Ferrari & Porsche, (430 Scud, 599) and his daily driving car is a Camry Hybrid.

Just my 2 cent.

What good does your Porsche do when the driver has no idea of how to take it anywhere close to its limits? Driving is so much more than straightline acceleration and street racing. If I were your car, I'd be crying and bemoaning of how my driver has no idea of how to tap into my potential~

I definitely agree.

Don't judge people by what they wear or what they drive. For me, I loved Porsches since I was a child.... because of the unfair stereotyping for people who owns pricier cars... I made myself waited until last year to finally buy my first 911 (being afraid of being judged as a spoiled kid or farmers) . I'm a big fan of cars, doesn't matter if it's Tata or Bugatti, I just really enjoy studying about each car.

Can't we just keep this forum clean and friendly, where car guys and gals come and talk about car stuff.

And..... stop giving Porsche owners a bad reputation! Majority of Porsche owners I met are just genuine, down-to-earth car nuts.
作者: chobit    時間: 2010-8-5 15:59

Not sure if I am dead wrong.. but buying a relatively luxury car in North America is actually not that difficult...!  You just have to work hard, and not over spend...!

Average low level income is probably around $35,000-, if you would to save $750 a month for 5 years.  You have a saving of $45,000-

That's probably enough to lease/finance yourself many high performance used cars

If you start this at age of 24, you should archive your goal before 30 years old.

So, honestly speaking, you don't have to be rich to do so, just matter of priority.

The purchase price of used Boxsters aren't very expensive at all. High $20k to $30k-ish can already get you a recent model (2005-ish?) la. Older ones are even cheaper.

But, as with everything Porsche, maintenance costs are pretty expensive. Bigger maintenance jobs will require having the engine dropped, so even when you don't consider the costs of replacement parts, labour alone won't be cheap la.

err Please tell us where you can find 2005+ boxsters at $20k to $30k in Vancouver BC???

Maintenances costs are pretty expensive? Actually i do agree to your point than why bother dreaming of having a porsche if you Can't even affort the maintenance fee?

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rds/cto/1877503444.html

再加波子特貴 parts(佢連換油都要 9-10L synthetic,而唔係一般車嘅 4-5L 恐龍油),條數不如你計俾我睇仲好啦?

同你講咁多真係教精咗你。不過我諗就算今次袋咗錢入你袋,下次你都會繼續講啲戇車野來再次出醜嘅。

Lik gor ..  high 20K range .. is a bit low la.. may be in US, or high km one ..

But $30K range does make sense, (private deal, no warranty, may be grey import US car)

As you said, buying one isn't hard, some late 90's Boxster are under $20K, and they are still great car, however, service cost can be high, but good thing for living in Vancouver is, if you want to save $ from your pocket, you can drive to US for service, (and do shopping etc in the same time) ie: oil service is only ~ $300US, vs $500Cad, tire/brake etc are all 20-40% less down south ..

Depends what you compare la..  compare to Ferrari/Lambo ..  still much much more "reasonable", even compare to Lotus/AM/Bentley etc ..  most service, no longer need to "釣副偈落來" ga la..  most the work can be done from UNDER, just take both rear wheel/penals off ..  service cost probably same or slightly more then M6/M5.

I know I will stick with my Porsche with warranty only at this point.  MY CPO is going to offer me a good 2 years, then I'll make sure to pay $3-4K for extended warranty (3-4 years).

I don't quite know how much it is for service.., but I know tires will cost me a lot...!  I am expecting it will cost me 2x as much than my STi.  Afterall, I spent so much on my STi tires, and aftermarket parts...  Since I won't be mod. the Porsche, I think I am pretty safe in the area..!
Honestly, I kind of lost track on how inexpensive it is to service some cheaper cars.... !  My wife RDX is still service at the dealership, and it's does cost about $250ish each time.  My Subaru cost about $200 average as well, and that excluding bring my own Amsoil oil and filter which is close to $100 in expenses.
A side note.  My trade-in my Subaru knowing that I need a new clutch works, which will cost me about $1.6K, then I'll be doing my 60,000miles service probably next year.., I take that as a saving picking up my Porsche.. (My excuse to my wife haha)

When it comes to high performance cars, you can't avoid the tire costs la. First of all, their sizes and dimensions almost automatically mean they're gonna be more expensive. Secondly, you want to get the most out of your high performance car ar mah, so it makes sense to get some sticky summer rubber. The best ones certainly don't come cheap ga.

Anyway...  another plus for you, as you are living in the US ... paying ~1/2 price for tire compare to us!   say a 305/30/19 performance tire, ~ $600 plus here, plus $200 labour to install (4) vs ~ $300-350 in US, and $80 to install ...

Davidcooper: I already addressed what Lik said, older RR Porsche do need to drop down the engine for most the work, but not newer one, same as Older Ferrari/Lambo.  By the way, don't STEP on people with miata, no matter you drive Porsche, Lambo or Bentley, Miata is a damn good car.

Moron,
Your original challenge (albeit a stupid one) to me was that a high $20k - $30k Boxster wasn't available in Vancouver at all, and my two postings have clearly dispelled your ignorance. If you still want to come back and talk crap about Craigslist, go right ahead. In this day and age, Craigslist is an extremely popular and effective form of classified ads. To discredit it the way you did only further shows how ignorant you are.

Rich bastards with no class will always have no class. You are a living proof of what it means to be 窮得只剩下錢. Oh well~

To CP:
Tires in the States are certainly much, much, MUCH cheaper than what we have here in Canada. Heck, a (Canadian) tire retailer once said that for many tires, their invoice prices are already HIGHER than the US retail price. Fortunately for many of us that live close to the border, we can still enjoy the benefits of cheap US tires by buying there.

Hey you WANNA-BE boxster owner. You know very little about cars but trying to sound like a Porsche engineer and that really disgust me.

Any retarded can private sell their basic(no xenon light) 05 boxster at 30-ish price.

Seriously Private sells are bullsh1t when you're buying a " Porsche " a real car not talking a "cell phone" here.
They could be scammers/US import cars/way too many unknown Mods/have no idea what they've changed and what they've done to the car/no warranties after buying from them/could be lots of damage inner of the engine/suspenion when you bring your car to servies.

Didn't wanna explain this thought everyone KNEW IT

(Thought you should knew the basics when you moron is trying to be a PORSCHE ENGINEER)

I'm not saying "Craigslist" is bad for buy/selling cars but thats not my taste. Go Enjoy buying your 05 boxster from "Craigslist"-  Mr Lik

Last i never said Miata was bad or anything but its just not a porsche alrite. Is very hard for me to stop my laughs when you retard never own/drive a porsche is telling me what porsche is like and many of your informations you've said weren't even correct.

I don't give a sh1t to your Miata/whatever car you drive really but before trying to be a PRO on a " Porsche 911 thread " Please do some research first. Or AT LEAST DRIVE THE CAR FIRST BEFORE Leaving COMMENTS.

Thanks for reminding me that i'm not at your level/class. I've never worry about the maintenances fee before buying a car.  Sorry for not able to understand your 90s Miata level.  I wish i can drive a 90s Miata like you everyday. It's such a nice car.  Is quite hard to find one at it's age nowadays. I wish i can drive your car everyday LIKE YOU.

Please don't tell me you're at age 30 or above. Or i will be way too jealous of your SUCCESS AT YOUR AGE. How successful you're to own a 90s Miata and give me a free lesson on how Lik: "Boxster, Cayman, 911做親大 service 都要釣副偈落來,再裝返上."  You know what i can't be more jealous of you but too bad i know we're at different stages

Hey cool down guys.. or gals....!
I really doesn't matter what we drive, and what we do, being a better person is far more than that..!  I know I can't stop this from happening on a public forums.., but I do get tire seeing all these name calling.  It was alright at first... but it gets old pretty quick...!

As for Lik, you comparison with a Porsche to other performance cars or Cayman, does seem to show your lag of personal experience with these performance cars.  It's like I can tell you how great Kobe beef is all day long, but it still impossible for you to get it until you actually try it first hand...!

BTW, Cooperfield, don't forget I had a 99 Miata (and my best friend had a Miata for a couple of years too).  We love Miata, and they are some of the best japanese handling car available which are very capable for racing.  Check out some of the spec Miata racing here in the US.  It's actually very fun to drive a Miata because of it low weight, smaller size.  You can toss it around like no tomorrow, and it's very forgiving, and easy to drive..!  And it is very very cheap to keep up the maintain. with them.

Well said EL .. every car has different character ... a 599 is better looking and better performance then a Camry, but to some people, Camry is a better car..

Something like 370Z, 335iS etc, are great value sporty car, and they are not bad on track, can keep up with 911, 430 etc, but laps after laps ..  can see why Porsche/Ferrari cost more la...

Anyway, keep this thread peaceful la.. some people just drive a RSX, some people drive 911 .. mojority people, car is just transportation..  ^_^

Just like some girls don't mind to use Coach handbags, some can afford H bags ... no gid deal wor!

I can't agree this line anymore.

I'm over 30 and I do own a 92 Miata which I never consider as a POS.  You could said whatever you want, but still nothing make you a better person than anyone else.

If a person need to show his expensive ride to prove his status, it only means he doesn't have other better quality to show.  Mr Davidcopperfeel, I don't think you're such a person, so please don't act like that.
