VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Young Canadians fear they'll be working well into their 70s.  Forty per cent of us say working longer is their number one worry, according to an Edward Jones survey.

News1130 hit the streets of Vancouver to see if we could find any savvy savers who have at least started planning for the long road ahead.

One woman says, "Well, I already started my tax free savings account and have put stuff into my RRSPs so I'm hoping I am well on my way to financial security."

Another woman told us, "I started my own little fund before I was working full time and had a pension plan, so I've been setting aside 20 bucks a month. Just a little bit to help out."

But others admit they haven't even thought about their financial future.

Owing money

The money we owe, compared to what we make, is at a record high according to Statistics Canada.  The average household has nearly one and a half times more debt than personal disposable income.

That level, 148 per cent, was up more than four points in the July to September period.  It's also about one point higher than in the US, the first time that's happened in 12 years.

One of the key reasons behind the rise in debt is mortgages.  On the other hand, household net worth had its best gain in a year thanks to rising stock markets.
