Be the first to Comment  3 Recommendation(s) BURNABY (NEWS1130) - A loud bang got several people in Burnaby out of their beds early this morning, when an explosion rocked the community.

The rude awakening came around 3:30 a.m. near Patterson Avenue and Moscrop Street. RCMP headed down to the Westburn Community Centre after the building's alarms started to go off.

The doors to the gymnasium were blown out and there was a hole in a cinder block wall measuring 18 by 12 inches. The area was cordoned off although there was no fire and no one was hurt as the result.

Police are still trying to determine the type of explosive that was used and whether it was home made or purchased.

Sergeant Peter Thiessen says they believe the incident appears to be a random act that was not targeted directly at the community centre. "Whether it was a prank, whether someone was trying to send a message to someone, whether they were simply wanting to inflict some damage on this building for unknown reasons, all options are open."

He says the suspect probably wasn't trying to hurt anyone. "They did extensive damage, but it was at a quiet time in the middle of the night, in an area that there was absolutely nobody around."

Thiessen does say that if someone was close by, they could have been seriously hurt or even killed.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police or Crimestoppers
