Road tolls to cut down on congestion?
New article says it's worked in other countries

Be the first to Comment  0 Recommendation(s) VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Our commute is getting longer and costing us more than ever.

In Vancouver, the average commute is 67 minutes per day; every year, we spend over a month in our cars. A new Macleans article is finding out if tolls or "road pricing" would help cut congestion.

Andrew Coyne with the magazine says it's worked in other countries. "The kind of ring-toll that they did in London, where they put about 10 pounds to get into the city centre, it's had the enormous impact in terms of deterring people from making needless trips into city centre.

Coyne adds if we tolled roads, demand would go down. He says many people avoid public transit and car pooling because we still love the comforts of our own car.

The article says on average, driving just one kilometre on a Vancouver road costs 45 cents. Toll roads have cut congestion by up to 30 per cent in some countries.

Not just that...it's the one who take out car lane and put bike lane...so the already congested downtown core is even more congested...

Don't get me wrong I don't oppose bike lane but just not take the existing car lane for that. Vancouver is too rainy or hilly for avg people to really ride bike as daily commute!

Sure Road Tolls!!!

IF TRANSIT IS AS GOOD AS HONG KONG or other major cities!!!!
DON'T MAKE ME WAIT 7 MINS FOR A DUMB CANADALINE SKYTRAIN ON RUSH HOUR OR WAIT 1/2 hr FOR A STUPID BUS on the weekends......maybe .... only maybe, then we can start TOLLING ROAD USER!!!!

Macleans sure are making lots of enemies now adays!!!

Well...but metro Van has 1/10 of HK population...can't expect a large scale of mass transportation like HK...
The only thing I complain about Canada Line is too small...why only 2 carts ...all other lines got 3 or 4...

First:
1 month in our cars every year = 1/12 of our time is spent in our cars.
67 minutes per day = approximately 1/24 of our time is spent in our cars.
1/12 not equal 1/24, so wtf.

Second:
For people who live in Richmond or Vancouver, 1/2 hour for a bus is already very cool for Canada.  For people in Surrey, on weekends or not rush hours, 1 hour for a freaking bus, how can people depend on that to travel.
In some busy days, heavy rain or snow, the bus sometimes skip the stations and can take more than 2 hours for a freaking bus.   I was waiting in a snow storm out on the street and saw 2 of my buses went pass by me and it was freezing.  Waited 2 hours and I gave up and walk back home and skipped work.

Third:
I drive from White Rock to Richmond takes 20 minutes, take bus and sky train would take more than 1 hour + wait time.

Summary: the bus system now is not encouraging.
Fix the system, lower the fee, put more bus on the street to encourage people to use transit.  Simply increase the tolls only makes people angry and less efficient for the province.

Public Light Bus like Hk is the solution
