Thanks.

What kind of car you have and what was the mileage at your last change?

Transmission fluid, you don't need to change that often, not as often as engine oil though.

Guideline: 6000km/or every 4 months whichever comes first.  This is for typical cars.

shutterbug

I search webpage several mentions transmission fluid be changed every 30,000 miles (around 50000KM)or 2 years.
e.g http://cars.cartalk.com/content/advice/transmissionfluid.html
http://www.carcare.org/Auto_Transmission/trans_fluid.shtml

But my Mr.Lube record ask me to change it every 3 mths or 5000KM (similar to what you said), seems to be a large difference between 5000km or 50000km. That's why i confused.

I think they screwed up then...now the bigger question is that did they really changed your trans fluid or engine oil last time???

I was talking about 4months/6000km is for engine oil change. Sorry if I confused you.

Not really, Dragonair.
I do it every 15,000 km (which may be an overkill).
The frequency of tranny oil change is really a personal preference (provided that you don't go over the factory recommended interval).  Also, it depends on the method of oil change.  Normally, I would say at least 25% of the old oil would stay in the transmission (esp. torque converter), unless they have a machine to flush the whole system.  But I doubt the places you mention would have those machine.

Dragonair what car do u have?
作者: 字典仔    時間: 2008-2-19 01:11

normally i will recommand oil change every 5k or every 6 months (whichever comes first, say a very low mileage car might be good to do it at 4k or 3k interval ~ if that's what u get for 6 months, easier to keep record on things); and all fluid flush every 25k, or 2 years ~ again, whichever comes first.

now the thing is, ur car already has 255k, god knows if ur transmission fluid was very dirty or not?! I have told many ppl to change their oil after 800 to 1500km, that's just because their oil is sooooo dirty! i think transmission wise i have asked ppl to come back 1500km to 2000km after, again, that's because of their fluid is so dirty.

sazabi is correct, u wouldn't be able to drain all the transmission fluid out, without taking off the tranny and drain the torque convertor; depends on make, some cars u can only drain 30% (about 2.5L out of 8L), and some cars u can drain up to 66% (6L out of 9L)...as soon as the new fluid goes in it will mix with the old fluid then u will have to flush them out before they get too bad again....
作者: shutterbug    時間: 2008-2-19 08:30

It depends on what kind of flush you're doing.  If they flush with a machine,  which is the best method, it can almost replace all the fluid inside.  It hooks up to the cooler inlet and return and about 16L of fluid will be push into the tranny as the dirty stuff will be pushed out.

The "drain & fill" type of fluid change like the ones on Toyota is recommended at a short interval because they merely don't replace much fluid, only about 2.5L.

Some GM products, they claim their fluid can last for the lifetime of the car
作者: SAZABI    時間: 2008-2-19 09:53

Place with the flushing machine for tranny may charge arm + leg for one tranny fluid change...

Last time I got one, they charged me sth like $125 just for using the machine... + oil and labour... i think i end up paying $200 for that.
作者: 字典仔    時間: 2008-2-20 02:52

as far as i recall most toyota can take 3.5L to 4L for drain and fill...yet still it's only about 1/2 of what the entire tranny takes...

i think Audi and VW says lifetime for their ATF, when my friend did his at 75k, dealer was telling him his tranny is going to be busted soon...

i have seen tranny being damaged by the machine, some time it's not good when the tranny is in poor condition; automatic transmission is driven by hydraulic pressure, if the tranny has worn out and dirt is somewhat holding up the pressure (can also make it sluggish); but when it's too clean, have seen car that lost one gear afterwards...overall, it's 2 to 3x more than a regular drain and fill

If your tranny is in poor condition to begin with...don't even bother with fluid change and what not, sell the car ASAP and get another one!  I'm serious.  Nothing can save a tranny besides rebuilding it.
作者: 字典仔    時間: 2008-2-27 01:43

problem is lots of ppl dun even know their tranny is dying...

and multiple fluid flush actually helps it to last longer, even tho it might not regain all the power (hydraulic pressure)...

wait, are u saying the light for the shifter? like where it shows PRND2L, tiffiant?

you only have to change light bulb, not the fluid bor...

as for 97 corolla, it just uses regular dexon III, some newer toyota uses Type TIV and even WS now...so can't use cheap dexon no more...

and some toyota has differential fluid that u should change while doing transmission fluid, as they will mix together internally ~ but change seperately

Hmm... I take it that you've never had your transmission fluids changed, Tiffiant? In that case, I would definitely NOT recommend a transmission flush. You should still look into an ATF (automatic tra ...

i have a manual, but it doesn't show me where to fill in......
so, in my case, you suggest that i don't repair myself? because i'm a newbie to cars

i dont' think there is a light bulb in the tranmission thing.... i think something wrong witht he fluid that it makes the light off...
the p r n d 2 l got no light for a period of time....
作者: 字典仔    時間: 2008-3-16 13:34

97 corolla has a low transmissoin fluid light? i didn't notice that tim (was just working on one day)...

or u mean low in engine oil ar?

u have to pull the dipstick out and see what is wrong before u start topping it up, and if it hasn't been changed for awhile it's actually better to change it instead of topping it up too
作者: tiffiant    時間: 2008-3-16 14:57

if there is no lights on p r n d 2 l, that means something wrong with the transmission fluid........

nope, that only means a burnt light bulb!

but if u haven't changed that for a long while, better also have it checked too
作者: tiffiant    時間: 2008-3-22 10:46

are you sure? i googled for the transmission, there is no light bulb for that.....
and i don't think there's space for transmission light bulb........

The tranny is under the car.... what you see inside is just the control box...
There are crap load of space for a light bulb under that shifter neh...
and... if a light bulb is needed, I bet they can make space to put a light bult in the tranny LOL
作者: tiffiant    時間: 2008-3-22 22:55

so, i have to read the tranny map in order to see whether my car has space or not.......

and i still drive it....ahahaha
phone number nah....cna't repair it myself

then it's just the gear indicator on the console, a cheap light bulb to replace (pretty expensive for a tiny bulb, i think it's close to $10 but last u years, while the older corolla use a $0.50 bulb)...

labor will probably be about $30 tho, i guess no biggie if u have been driving around like that for 4 years...

yet if u said u haven't changed ur transmission fluid for so long, better do it soon ;)

No kidding!!! I got one for $14.  Then the bulb behind the clock costs $8.
And the stupid clock bulb burned out again few weeks ago LOL

Doesnt matter who changed the fluids, the important part is make sure it had been properly tghtened, watch for any leak after.
