use a slower shutter and get a f1.4 prime

To maintain a bit more DOF and remain reasonable sharpness in hand held situation, using higher ISO within it's quality range is a good idea. But I'm using Canon, no comments on Nikon though.

D3s is the best ultra high iso DSLR in the market now ..

However, up to ~ iso 3200, you are not going to see the different between D700/D3/D3s/5DII/1D4 ..

And how often you need iso 3200? taking bullet shoot??

When I was consider D3 and D700 ~ 2yr ago, I picked D700, not just because it is less money, (cost for body is just minor compare to the whole system) as their AF system are identical, exact sensor, same metering system, exact same picture outcome, main different is 8fps vs 9fps, longer shutter life on D3 (300k vs 200K app.) and slightly strong body .. (but doesn't fit me .. )

ISO 3200 at f2.8 would be situations where I can't even see your face clearly within 5 feet.

Regarding hand shake, how much shake there is depends on your skill.  In a meeting situation, I can't imagine everyone is dancing like Michael Jackson.

I don't think ISO3200 is within my mentioned "quality range" though, no matter which camera and model. (that's why it's not me to mention about using 3200! haha) And I don't think any "skillful" person can hand held a camera in 5 secs without any shake (maybe some people said they can, because they haven't blow up the pics to check!). It's not about how skillful the person is, human has limits.

why do you need 5 secs?

f2.8 at 1/25 is more than enough for most indoor lightings.

and with IS, you can easily shoot 1/10 without shake

D3s is really another class.  File is very clean.

Or just get a flash if it is low light.

Also depends on the budget, and how "heavy" you want to carry ...

Well, D700+grip is not small or lighter then D3s, however, you have the flexibility to NOT use the grip, nor external flash.

Again, if better high iso performance is what you need, D700 or D3s can do the job .. much much better then D300.

I rarely do more then iso 2000 ...  other then taking some sleeping picture of my little baby ...

Plus as Like gor said, if you don't want to use flash nor tripod, and not using a fast lens, and need to shoot at iso .. get some noise reduction software la...

"f2.8 at 1/25 is enough for most indoor lightings", but may I know at what ISO and if flash is needed?
Unless you only shoot for dead objects (stationary), even with IS, the subject you're shooting may be moving around, which 1/25 you might not have hand/camera shake but may still result a blurry picture.
If people only rely on IS system and fast lens, then I don't think too much skill is needed la.

I put my D300 and 70-200 zoom f2.8 VRII on mono pod with MF and slow shutter speed (1/50, 1/30 or 1/25) or handheld if I need to walk around. But some picture blurred when speakers shaking heads or waving their hands.  External flash is not allowed in my situation. Sometimes I need to shoot indoor basketball games, slow shutter speed can't help.  I prefer to spend less on body but lens, just need to find out if my job requirement is far beyond D300's capability.

Well .. if it is needed ... with job, then u can consider the 200 F2VR ... not much more then a D3s body ...

As always, you'll get a better final product when you shoot RAW la, but even if you were only shooting JPEG, you can still have Noise Ninja process it wor?

This is a good example for why IS or VR lens doesn't work in some situations (which many people don't understand). Cuz the subject you're shooting is moving in a faster speed than you set on your camera that can freeze their motion in order to result a reasonable sharp picture. Plus, flash is not allowed, the only solution is to use higher ISO.

Then more reasonable solution will be 85 f1.4 lens on D300.  2 stop faster so you can shoot with 2x of shutter speed.

Catpiano: with a corpped. it is pretty long unless you shoot wild tigers.  Next one is 135 f2, but you lose one stop.  Catpiano, why you have so many lens?

85mm .. even on crop, not that long for basketball game .. etc la..

Anyway, for Basketball etc game, zoom is still a bit handy gei ..

But problem for 70-200VR II is, it is not a real 70-200 .. it is more like 70-160 ..

For non-paid clients, D700 is way more then enough.  Some hired gun is only shooting D90/D300, and have very good results.

If you like I can meet up in a lunch hour and tell you want I know, or go out with Brother Cowboy to do some street shooting.  I haven't been to photo club. But those guys trend to be shooting films in the past, so they will know more than an average Digital guys.

Not sure about Vancouver, but the meetups I've been to in Seattle have a fair share of both newbies and established photographers.  Most of the time you just want to hook up with a couple people who share the same vision and interest as you do and start from there.

It's important to go w/ someone who has a similar approach/style.  Sometimes I would stand at a street corner for 20-30 mins waiting for something to happen.  A landscape guy or portrait guy would not want to do that.
