I'll like to hear your opinion/experience ...

Your boy is ready for preschool already???  How old is he now, probably not 3 gua?

Which preschool will probably be based on which location is more convenient for you.  Generally, montessori is better but they also charge more.

I heard some preschools charge non-montessori price but they copy from montessori programs.

well he is not 3 yet ... but we just have to plan for it.  doing research ...

we found a montessori nearby but I have heard good/bad opinion about them.
作者: daimo    時間: 2008-2-20 16:44

I mean opinion about Montessori in general, not that I have an opinion about that preschool.
作者: koala    時間: 2008-2-20 17:43

I am doing research on pre-school as well....my friends all told me that montessori is better...child learn things by themselves...by some natural way instead of something like 填鴨

Daimo, where do you live? Richmond or Vancouver?
作者: daimo    時間: 2008-2-20 17:54

Richmond.

I heard that montessori doesn't work for all children, especially for children who are more shy/passive.  If that's the case, the child will be completely lost and frustrated.

My ex is a montessori teacher in Richmond...She's seems to be ok...the senior teachers are quite strict...
But a lot of the students are mainland chinese...sometimes can be quite a handful

I went to montessori when I first came to canada.  The teacher was awesome, she treated us to mcdonalds frequently.

Montessori or not, it depends on how the principal runs it.

My coworker's daughter went to Montessori for 1 week, and her daughter keep crying because their teacher keep ignoring her question.  Once switched, so happy to go to school.  But, IMO, that is just a bad example of how a school is being run, not necessarily a result of the Montessori system.

All in all, the best way to judge a pre-school/Montessori is either by word of mouth or pay a visit in person and see how the kids behave.  The 2 candidates that I register ( one regular and one Montessori ) are recommended by friends and coworkers.  After visit and they both seems to be very well organized.

Do register early -- or at least leave a name in place.  Vacancies are getting very tight in the last couple years.

i wish i went to montessori but i didn't come until grade 6...
but my brother is attending montessori. he is in grade 2 and he has been there since kindergarten.  i was surprise how much a 7year old can learn and know. i think it is because of the school...
because my bro has special interest in science. the teacher really encourages it... he pretty much can tell the difference between different kinds of dinosaurs, whales, spiders, etc. the school encourage well roundedness, there was one day my bro started telling us about picasso and he can recognize his style of painting... when my dad went to mall when my bro one day, dad randomly pointed at a painting and ask my bro if that is from picasso to start a convo... he was so surprised that lil kid can actually tell that it is not...

just wondering for all parents out there...

what age did you start sending your kid to preschool/daycare?
my son is only 1 years old now so i know it's a bit early to worry..but i also know most places require early early registration and waiting lists..so i want to get some opinion

i've noticed that some preschools start at 2.5 years old and some at 3 years old

and...is preschool necessary/mandatory?
or is a playgroup sufficient until they head to kindergarten?

the reason i'm asking this is because i'll probably be moving to taiwan when my son is about 3 or 4 years old...in a way i'm worried if he makes a lot of connections/friends in school here and i have to make him leave halfway, he'll have a hard time settling in taiwan. but i also want him exposed to an english-speaking environment before he turns into a 台客 in taiwan..

I think the appropriate age for pre-school is 4 and 5 (2 years of pre-school).  Unless you have to work, it's not a good idea to leave your child to a caring center when they're so young.

a lot of personal questions here, only you can answer for yourself...

preschool is not mandatory

some places take 2.5 but some places don't, generally 3 and up is OK

playgroup is play only, you might want your kid to learn some basic stuff

don't worry about too much, I don't think there'll be a big problem if you let him go to preschool, normally you only go for a few hours a week.

The reason why we'd like our daughter to join preschool is she will be the only kid in family -- so social skill is important.

3 is a good age to start...sometimes depends on ur child...some of them are capable of going to montessori from 2.5

Nikonian, would you mind telling me which two preschools you registered if you live in Richmond?  We are also doing some research about the preschools for enrolment in September.

Hi weesing,

I'm not in Richmond area, so my school registered are near South-east Vancouver.

Also my wife just did a search for preschool / daycare in west side for this fall and funny enough many of them said the queue is already over 50... some even say 100 on the waiting list ( class size = 25 ).

My nephew is attending montessori school in richmond.
He's been there for 2 years already.
The first few weeks, he cries and not wanting to go to school... but after a while  he got used to the environment and he loves it.
I think he learned a lot from montessori.  The teachers taught them french..(simple phrases) and songs and naming continents etc...
Overall, i think montessori schools are great

Thank you Nikonian.

Does anyone have any experience with the preschools in the community centres?  I also like to hear comments (good/bad) about montessori preschools in Richmond.

2. Oak 49th ( they said it's more a place for serving the college staff nearby.. so you know which );
3. near UBC;
4. again UBC;
5. Kitsilano area;
