ha..almost everyone i know nowadays starts their baby with rice cereal..and all around 4 months too
it seems most doctors nowadays suggest babies to start solids earlier and earlier...
we were given to okay at 4 months but we waited until 5 months too.
we started with rice cereal and then pureed carrots, peas
later we introduced fruits (fresh and pureed)
you might want to start with just one tablespoon cereal + lotsa milk for the first time
see what the reaction is..and make it VERY watery because your baby won't know how to swallow correctly yet
feed this for a few days and see if your baby has any reaction to it..
if you check online, most websites and books will suggest you to introduce a new food for at least 4 to 5 days before introducing something else to make sure your baby doesn't have a reaction to it
also, once a baby starts baby food, they might get constipated easily...my son is fine with most foods EXCEPT rice. even congee makes him constipated..so we have to add veggies and prune to rice so he won't have a problem pooping.
also, remember for the first year of baby's life, milk is the most important meal. so try to supplement with cereal, not replace milk with baby food.
good luck and have fun!作者: blueprint 時間: 2008-2-21 07:35
Really? My area like hospital, clinics, nurses, and others suggested to start solid when 6months old, not 4 months old due to the issues of allergies and digestion. However, if the baby really show signs of wanting solid early, they are ok to feed after 4 months.
Usually, there is a detailed instruction written on the cereal (pablum) box on how to get baby adjusts to the new food. ie. 15ml of cereal mixed with 30ml of milk once a day for at least 3 days in the morning作者: 華美子 時間: 2008-4-17 22:39
華美子, you can try some fruits too, like applesauce, banana, pear. I buy Heinz organic, they taste better. My baby loves them.
As your baby is only 6 months old, I think 每日一餐 is ok. Every baby is different, so don't know how much is enough, let your baby decide, if she refuses to eat, that means enough. But be careful not to feed her too much, some babies don't refuse food. They'll just eat everything you feed them, that will make babies throw up or cause diarrhea.作者: koala 時間: 2008-4-18 15:51
華美子, i wanna ask do you make congee for your baby, or just buying baby food? My son is about to eat solid food.
You said you add carrot, is it the one from the baby food? or you make it fresh. And for the meal schedule, do i substitute one solid food meal with one bottle of milk? or just give it to him like snack?作者: 華美子 時間: 2008-4-18 19:31 標題: 回復 6# 的帖子
koala, right now I am feeding my baby baby just baby food, no congee yet.
I have not yet started making home made baby food. According to Pat the nurse from mother group, DO NOT substitute milk with soild food. As your baby is still young, feed your baby the regular amount of milk cuz this is his main nutrition. baby food should be extra item for now. Pat said you could consider using milk to make rice cereal for your baby, this way he won't be eating too much but he could still have regular portion milk and some solid.
Pat also mentioned the food order should go like this:
1) grain
2) veggies
3) meat
4) fruits
it is very important to feed grain first because your baby needs iron from grain. feed veggies earlier than fruits because your baby may not like to eat veggies if he has tried the sweet stuff.
I usually feed my baby half a small bowl of solid food and her regular bottle of milk for her second meal of the day. I feed my baby rice cereal to start with for a couple weeks, then I started adding carrot in the rice cereal and she tried 5 days already. Today I fed her rice cereal + peas (baby food) and will continue to do so for several days. Then I will introduce barley cereal to her after she finished her box of rice cereal. I'll let her try one new stuff for several days.
I am also looking for a good chopper so I could cook some congee for her. Baby Kingdom 有媽媽教先將米磨成粉備用,之後每次煮幾多就北幾多米粉出來煲,D粥就會綿好多。煲番薯或南瓜粥又或者吞拿魚粥都幾好。
It's an awesome blender for making baby food (of course other stuff too)! It's speed and power can turn anything to liquid form in seconds! Also, if you blend things raw, like fruits and veggie (for adaults of course), it holds most of the nutrients because of it's speed and power, which is very easy to absorb and more effective. It's a machine for everyone in the household.
I cooked the meat, veggie, etc first then put those in the vitamix, add a bit of water, then literally seconds later all becomes "paste"!
Occationally, they have a booth in Costco to demo. They're not cheap though, around 500 bucks, kinda scary when I first saw the price tag too, but now I think it's not a bad investment.
shutterbug, it really scared me when you said the blender is $500.....didn't expect that expensive....wowowo...really a big investment作者: 華美子 時間: 2008-4-19 10:36 標題: 回復 8# 的帖子
I don't think I could afford that. That's too expensive.作者: kaimui22 時間: 2008-4-19 11:12
a mini blender/food processor that works well is the one from zellers...there are no speeds or anything but it's blade is quite sharp and its small enough just great for baby food. i think it was only $10!
if you are not going to make A lot of baby food, just get something simple and cheap..and quite portable too
btw, this one is quite easy to clean compared to the vertical blenders..the blade can be removed from the container to be rinsed作者: koala 時間: 2008-4-27 13:02
wanna ask...should i start giving solid food to my son in every meal or just one meal at a day? He has started to have solid food for a week already作者: newmama 時間: 2008-4-30 14:40
since your baby is only 6 months old, I would say 1 meal at a day is enough
