so by that logic
if you can buy a condo for $400K
then $100K is nothing to you?

but I think I will pass

there is no way I will let this sit in my locker and not bring it outside

and given how I abuse my regular M9, this guy will be worthless in no time

I tried my hand on M9 for a day.  I am not impressed.

My copy has software issues, a lemon so to speak.  (Photo loss, shutter won't fire) For that kind of money, it is very disappointing.  Leica lens are diff story.

There are thousands of shooters out there who never had the kind of experience you had.  I guess if I walk out the door one day and trip, I should never walk out my door again?

Besides a frozen screen once every 3 months or so, I have never had any mechanical issues.

and again,

this combo is not for you to "use"

there are tons of celebrities or rich ppl out there who will pay $30K for this kit.

5 months ago I saw a 35mm lux v1 for $3100 and I didn't pull the trigger
now it's over $4300

I envy those who paid $5k for the lux v2 back in last November
now it's worth $6800

when you buy a DSLR
no matter how good
you expect to lose money in the long run

but I expect to make money on every piece of Leica gear I own (except the M9 i am currently abusing)

I wish I can think and act that way ....

I buy what I use ...  not to make money ..  would be making sense .. if I did study harder ... and be an engineer .. dentist .. lawyer .. etc in order to make more money ... haha ..

the two are not mutually exclusive
i can have a good paying job and make money on my gears at the same time

and of course I use my gears.

I shoot more images than everyone I know (other than those who do it for a living)

but you don't have to lose money on your stuff

He he ... I am lazy ...  when I have time ..  just sticky with my little son ...

He is my precious gift from God .. ^_^

Don't get me wrong, when I was young, I didn't mind to do that, no matter from sports car to camera ..  spend time/research to buy some good used one .. and sell within short period .. not to make money, but minimize my lost/depreciation ....

Now? as a 3X yr old father Old Cake, just buy whatever new gears when they come out, not doing as much research ..  car .. just lease ...

Since you are in cowtown, living exp. is sooooo low compare to Vancouver.  You should have enough money to buy new toys for yourself.

But playing with kids is way more fun than M9, plus you barely have time to go out and shoot anyway.

LOW YOUR HEAD!! It is 2011 now, not 1986!!

Everything in Calgary is the MOST expensive in Canada .. (House price is second)

Even I make more money then 10 yr ago ..  but LESS money I can save!! (but bigger debt ... lol)

These kinds of camera is more like collectibles. For better investment? Maybe real estate market la!

When you're talking about $1200-1800 gain on certain cameras. Don't you think most successful real estate investments can gain more than that?

    100% your head ...

Yes. many new comers from China may spend $million on buying houses like nothing .. but still many (most) people in Van/richmond/Coq etc live in houses UNDER $1M ...

Just like HK .. many $100M homes ..  but in general, everything is cheaper .. (basic)
Food/service etc are much cheaper in Vancouver compare to Calgary (or even Edmonton) ..

So say $10K/month basic expense, in Van, may be $4-5K in mortgage (normal people, not people from mainland with big cash) vs $3-4K in mortgage in Calgary ...  but then property tax is higher in % here ..  we are talking ~ 10% different in total spending ..  we may pay 5 or 10 cent less in gas, but more in dinning out, servicing, (ie Nanny is 20% more expensive here then Van) and parking! Downtown parking here is ~ $500/month, vs $200 in Vancouver ..  2 parking spots already make out the mortgage different.

Anyway .. back to Topic ..  buying an old film Leica .. may be an investment ..  on digital body ..  hard to say ...

I think I'm the other way round, I look at actual dollars, not %.
You bought a camera at $3100 and it raised to $4300 later, it's a 38.7% gain but still only $1200. But in real estate investment, it's not likely to have that % of gain in a short term but easily to gain more than just $1200.
But let's stop discussing this investment comparison, which is not really related to the topic. Sorry to have this raised up.

Well if I can get 5-10 of these at that price, may be it consider as a good investment.
