LANGLEY (NEWS1130) - The parents of Kassandra Kaulius are sharing their pain, as the Mounties launch a summer counterattack campaign. The 22-year old student, athlete and coach died when her car was hit by an accused drunk driver in May.

Two months later, her parents are still in a lot of pain. Victor Kaulius was fighting tears as he spoke. "We just had father's day, it's my birthday coming up, we had mother's day."

The province introduced tougher drunk driving penalties last fall but the family wants more. Markita Kaulius says she is angry when she hears people say the penalties are too strict.

"And if they think (the penalties) are too tough, you come to my house and I'll take you to my daughter's gravesite. You tell her that it's too tough. It's not tough enough".

The Mounties say there have been seven alcohol-related road deaths in Metro Vancouver so far this year, down by two-thirds compared to this time last year. Inspector Norm Gaumont says the number is still too high.

"Seven too many, as far as I'm concerned. We'd like to take that down, absolutely, so no families lose loved ones".

Expect Counterattack road checks across Metro Vancouver over the next two months, especially on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.
