Demand for Vancouver to cover Pride costs
A new call to make the parade 'civic status'

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Just weeks ahead of the Vancouver Pride Parade comes a demand from the NPA. There is a call to give the event 'civic status' and that would mean the City of Vancouver picks up a big part of the tab.
The call is for the city to grant the special status to a handful of parades that draw more than 50,000 people. The idea is also that the status would help cover the cost of sanitation and policing, which cause Pride organizers close to $60,000 last year.
Currently, only two events, the Grey Cup Parade and the Celebration of Light, have those two things covered.
"As a civic event and something that draws a lot of people to the city, then the city should help kick in with the costs," says one Vancouver man who's in favour of the idea.
Openly gay Vancouver City Councillor Tim Stevenson says the NPA is just fishing for votes with a proposal they floated today to grant the Pride Parade civic status. "The NPA over the past many, many years has done absolutely nothing for the gay community."
He says he supports the idea in principal, but the costs could get out of control if the city starts doing it for every parade.
