Hey,

I know a few of the hardcores are into AutoX here. I am interested in trying out AutoX and see if I'll like it, but not so sure what is the best course to do so. I looked at VCMC website but not too sure which event is suitable for a noob to go to. Any regulars mind to give a few pointers? Thanks!

take the velocity one driving school first... I think it'll be your best $150 you ever spend on it.
I took that 3-4 years ago... It's good they provide a safe environment to let you know your car's limit.
Instructor ratio is approx 1 per 2 student or so. So it's not bad, consider it's a full day driving school...

Do u know if they have this kind of driving school in Seattle?

How does the Velocity Driver Training compare to this?
http://www.bmwccbc.org/schools/index.html

Is the Velocity training really for people interested in AutoX already? Cuz I want to see if I like it first before I plunge $150??

I've no experiences with the BMW driving school, but the Velocity got skid pad, big sweeper (good old boundary bay airport layout always had one), offset gates, brake, weight transfer etc... They also included a classroom lesson...

Back then, I had a few free ride inside those auto x car out on the course... I liked it and velocity got me into that sport. If there's auto x events, you can go there and ask people there to give you a ride and see how you like it first before you pay $150. Maybe that will work out easiler for you

I have taken the driving training course (from bmwccbc) before la. Personally I found it very useful.

auto-x would benefit drivers a lot on steering input, throttle response and reaction time, it would benefit thru daily driving; but when u are TOO addicted to it, lots of the time i think the setting is not really for street use, ie hwy driving...

have heard quite a few ppl wrote off their car with auto-x setup, or at least some serve damage; but if u dun mind buying tires and cleaning cone marks, auto-x is worth the money to get some skills; but long term wise track day is still the way to go ~ no need to compete with others, just compete with yourself!

is it useful to take both the BMWCCBC course and the Velocity course? 1 seems to be vehicle basics, the other seems like racing basics?

Any LYK going for AutoX event n mind if i do sit-in's? ~ I can also do photos while at it.~

i dunno any of us are still going in regular basis, but velocity one is not for racing, it doesn't tell u anything about "racing"...lots of the time the best race line is depended on cars, setup, driver...so either should benefit ur needs (bmw club might know ur bmw better)...

me, spoonek4, ashtaron14, winkyl, prelude318is, barF1, etc etc had gone thru that stage, some of us are now into track days as i find auto-x wasted my weekend (when i am getting quite busy like now, spending a day there, paid $25 or $30 but only 6 mins of race time?! i rather save up and go to the track once or twice a year!)

yup... tracks addicted now... haha...
I hated to pick up cones for a whole day and just do 4-10minutes of run out there for the whole day

The thing with autox is that it is dirt cheap ($20 - $40?), and doesn't require any prep work on the car at all. Also, because each race is so short, it is also not very demanding to the driver at all ...

What makes you think auto x doesn't need any prep work? You still need to check/top up fluids, check for any items that might worn out during daily driving (like brakes, clutch)... That short period of time you're out on the course is much more intense compare to driving on the track from my experiences. Cuz you've got a 1 min course, tiny mistake will cost you more time at the end. While on track, (lapping, not racing) you're much more relax to feel your car, if the car behind is faster than you, just point by, let it pass and then continue with your own pace.

once u start going to track days, u'll be wondering why you waste time in auto x.

auto x is fun when u can get unilimited runs, but with 3 runs only and each last less then a minute... it sucks...  waste whole day for 3 minute driving time.

agree that time-per-dollar-wise, track days give you a better deal. But the pace and adrenalin rush is different. You have more time to plan and think, whereas autox hones your reflex more. And of course, you pay a heck of a lot more for track days.

Lik Gor: U dun get our point la, and I think you have mistaken the idea for auto-xing too!

gotta admit, Auto-X is cheap compares to track day; yet everything is so intense and doing in such a rush time, things from suspension setup, tire pressure, alignment and driver's input will make a lot of difference! When you are a newbie, auto-x is a good place to start; but i would suggest when u start to know what u are doing, with testing out diff alignment, diff tire pressure, diff suspension, diff sway bars and diff driver's input, one should move onto track day.

Auto-x's setup is not daily driving friendly, will put lots of tire wear on the tires if u want good time / result at the course; daily driver setting will ruin ur time and ur tires on the course! when u see u are always slower than others, u will want to find out where to improve and will try diff things and u might screw up some time.

accident does happen during auto-x! i do mean serve car damage! not only the driver has to be careful on the course, basically anyone in the area has to be alerted; have u seen a car running into the bystanders watching the race? that happened when i was there and wrecked a miata too!

I have no experience on track...  only tried once in boundary bay autoX long time ago...

What do we need to do to our car in order to race on tracks ?
do we need any license or required to take courses before going to tracks?
can we use stock cars without any mod?
and how much more expensive than autoX?
and the track is in mission ? or seattle?

if u have only tried auto-x once long time ago, try to go there first before u go onto any track will make you know your car better (but very depends on the driver, some are not necessary but some will benefit a lot)...

as for getting onto the track, u dun really need license but lots of the track will require u to attend some "high performance driving event" that has "instructors" available...u will pay a little bit more than seniors, and will have to go thru in class section and 遊車河 section with instructor, if instructor think u are doing ok then u will be out lapping with the slowest group; when u do better and better, they will reassign you back to your own class....

cars going onto the track should have done a thru out mechanical inspection, dun be cheap on brakes and tires because u can go thru a lot during one track day (so make sure u have enough life for pad and tires), normally i will suggest flushing all the fluid (engine / transmission / differential / brake fluid / clutch fluid and coolant) cuz u dun wanna put excessive wear to parts or break anything...

stock cars are fine, but at least get yourself some better brake pads and tires, if possible (just for your own safety, stock pad and all season tires will fade after couple laps)...

i have only been to mission once, it will be a one day trip, very tired and i dun like how i am facing a wall exiting a corner; ever since my first time there i have been going to Pacific Raceway in seattle, we usually cruise down the day before, have a good rest then race the next day...will drive back that nite (so yeah, a little bit more for hotel and gas, but is a much more fun track)...

oh, last but not least, lapping cost would usually be between $200 to $300, depends on which club hosted it and with or without instructor...

Wa ~~   sounds like so $$$$ !!!  you said don't cheap out on tires and brake pads..  but they will fade quickly in a race..
then $200 to $300 just for the race...  plus hotel, gas... and probably an instructor for the first time for an extra cost...
and if unfortunately there is an accident..   wa....

how many track days did you go through until you need to get a new set of tires and pads?

depends how eraser is your tires is... my r-comp on my miata usually will last 2-3 years summer + track driving easily... pad wise... every 2 years? daily driven tho...

Besides hotel, track fee, also one need a proper helmet. Those helmet is not cheap either. around $200?
There's also a race track in Portland. I like it more than the Seattle one because that makes a good SHOPPING TRIP! haha ;D

$200-300 for track day is cheap compare to what we have to spend here.  each track day at least 15-20k HKD

Hmm... the only thing I don't like about Track days is, it sounds high risk. I mean, you can really only go so slow and so careful, as you are still trying to drive somewhere near the limit.... And then what if another car is going idiotic instead of you? There ain't no insurnace/at fault etc on the track I don't think.....

AutoX.... you can get ur car smashed up to something other than cones, but the chance is much lower in an Auto X setting. They don't even have tire walls..... but yes..... a whole day spent but only a few minutes of total run time with tons of chores does not sound like an appealing combo.........

do they have family vans version of the driving lessons? lol...
if so, maybe i should try with my sienna

so other than boundary bay airport...  is there any other places for autoXing?
coz i remember long time ago when I went there, the ground was super rough...   my tires ended up having small rubber pieces chipped off..   so hurt..

sigh..   so expensive for track racing..   that's y there are lots of street racing going on la....
government should make a drag strip or small race track to reduce street racing law...

well that's why i only go once or twice in a year; actually the 2nd time i go i would only concern with engine oil / brake fluid (and clutch fluid for MT), cooling system and most of the other stuff will only need a "check up"...

depends on what car u drive, u can easily get a set of decent track pad (for beginners, those are way more than enough) for about $80 to $150 (say u have 4 wheel disc then 2 sets), labor wise wouldn't cost u an arm and a leg and if u are happy with those u dun have to take them out for daily driving!? some ppl like me would use slotted rotors for daily driving but i rather use blank rotors on the track

my car will be 9 years old next month, with numerous of auto-xing and about 6 track day event, i think i am on my 3rd set of R compounds right now? that's also my daily driving tires (with 2 sets of summer tires at the earlier years, about 102k on chassis now)...

and for $2xx, that's already including instructor, i forgot u paid $25 more or $50 more

Fibbi: i do wanna try portland raceway this year! have u tried them or?

biscottigelato: there is no insurance coverage for auto-xing either, i have a friend who had $6000 damage because of a stupid mistake ~ spun and threw the car into the weeds! those track day we go, it's not a real race and have limited section for overtaking etc, so u will hardly getting into any trouble and there is track marshell calling back to the control, if u are doing anything stupid, u will get black fagged!

makten: sorry, minivan and SUV is not allowed

just for fun

so track pad means longer life or better grip or both ?..   those have high pitch noise when braking ga wor... right? so annoying if you use it for daily driving..

but no matter what, I must try once in my life ga la ! should be a very nice experience...

aww too bad...initial d-ing with my sienna would've been cool
my frd goes for autox with his miata...

字典仔: already sign up for the portland track day near the end of April. There's one last week but then we are scared of the rainny days so we didn't sign up.
Btw, I am not the driver. My car is not good enough for these "intense" usage la...haha

My husband goes to the track day and I'm going shopping... Tax free wor! But according to him, the Seattle racetrack is more "scary" since there is slope or trees area? (can't remember exactly) while Portland track is flat land...So he feels a bit more "safe" in Portland...

The only thing with portland is the extra 3 hours drive... But then you get to shop tax free as well!
