VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A disturbing discovery in the waters of False Creek may yet be another chapter in what's become an international mystery.
The remains of a leg and foot in a running shoe have been found near the Plaza of Nations. Around 5pm yesterday, someone standing on a dock right behind the Edgewater casino found the floating remains.
"It appeared to be a leg bone sticking out of the shoe, which would be very disturbing," describes VPD Constable Jana McGuinness. "Quite a discovery to make. They called police right away."
The remains have been sent to the Coroner's office.
"The coroner can then examine what's left in terms of the human remains to see where we go from here," says McGuinness. "They'll forensically examine what remains they are, and go from there. It would really be speculation to say what was involved here. We just don't know."
"We do have to look at whether we need to do a more extensive search here, and we can always look at other avenues of search. Whether that involves a dive team or not, we're not there yet. We're just seeing what we have here right now."
In the past four years, about a dozen feet encased in shoes have washed up on beaches near Vancouver: along the southern Georgia Strait and off Washington State. This is the first time a foot in a shoe has been found in Vancouver.
