VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - There is also a reminder for drivers as kids head back-to-class this morning. ICBC's Adam Grossman says police will be out with extra enforcement, and it's up to you to be careful.
"They'll be looking at school zones, playground zones and crosswalks around schools and parks. This is an exciting time of year for kids, they get back-to-school to see their friends or they're meeting new friends and they're certainly not thinking about road safety."
He says it's easy for drivers to handle today's traffic crush, just slow down. "Every year in BC we see more than 16,000 children between the ages of five and 18 involved in a crash, thousands of injuries and unfortunately too many deaths as well. Back-to-school time can be a dangerous period," says Grossman.
Trace Acres with BCAA says drivers need to be diligent around the kids. "Watch out for children who may not be using a crosswalk, darting out from in between cars. Just expect the unexpected and make sure you obey the speed limits in school zones."
