I think the cost of living is relative affordable in Vancouver, with the exception of real estate.
The  price of rice is not much different from 30 years ago, I paid $25 CDN for a sack of AA Brand Rice
in 1977 when I came to Canada while the minimum wage was $3 per hour.

Not really, food in US is cheaper than Canada, or at least Vancouver.

meat is cheap in the US
but fruit is expensive

my parents were shocked at how much I pay for fruits

but expensive or cheap, we are talking about like a few %s of income
what difference does that make

Fruit is cheaper in the US than in Canada. Due to warmer weather in the US, they have longer growing seasons than in Canada.

It depends on which cities and what type of fruit you are comparing.

For example, Apple, which is also grown around in Interior, the price in Vancouver is comparable to Washington state.  For Asian fruit, Vancouver likely has better price than Seattle, as we import more.

Dairy products and eggs are much more expensive in Canada, no matter how much you buy.

Thanks to the national marketing agencies

Well, I am in Stupid Cow town ..  so .. in general, fruit/dairy product/milk etc ... is half the price from US...

Say milk, we bought some organic milk in Seattle, $2.99 (or 3.99?) for 2L .. vs $3.99 for ONE L here ...

Anyway, we all know everything is cheaper in US then the rest of the world in general .. and yes, it is also true, "RICE" price is only small % ..  one bag of rice is good for a yr or 2 ...  but few % here, few % there .. it all add up!

(Welcome back! PETER!)

I toured some organic diary farms in Abbotsford, the owner reserves some
unpasteurized milk for his family.  However,  all the milk goes into the vat have to be
pasteurized and shipped across the nation.
Some small cheese factories make  raw milk cheese and you can buy raw milk cheese     at  farm markets  if you are lucky.  Urban Fare has some raw milk cheese but they cost a fortune

cost of living is not the same as prices

the import prices can be low while the retail prices are high with rent/labor and everything else included

if your income is inflated, then your spending is also inflated. That doesn't change the fact that food prices are low.

True ..

That is why, cost of living in stupid Cow town is still "LOW" according to whatever report ... since average income here is almost highest in north america ..

Knew about raw milk cheese. There is/was a program that you can co-own a dairy cow and since you are the owner, you can get milk from the cow... It just gets very complicated... I just want to give it a try to see if I can actually drink it.
I am mildly lactose intolerance. I won't have bathroom problem after drinking cold milk but I felt "funny" everytime I drink it. But I am fine with cheese, yogurt, ice-cream...etc.
