Old dinning room really needed a facelift! I wanted a fresh brighter look thus white was the first to come to mind. But that will be too plain won't it? So texture was the key!

We ordered the wall panels and DIY the entire backdrop of where the table will sit. I've chosen this pattern and installed spot lights to cast dramatic shadows for a different ambiance.

I've changed the curtains to blinds with similar pattern to the featured wall.

I designed a custom made Live-edged table (Will be on a separate post) that is functional yet, transitional to the wall and the living room next to the dinning room.

New chandelier and a decorative wall clock to complete the new look!

Everything looks good except the chandelier... A bit out of tone in comparison (just my 2 cents).

Thanks for your feedback. I can appreciate your concern. I actually thought of replacing it at first. The chandelier was brought in from our old house. I had to use it to replace the ceiling fan immediately due to bad Fung Sui. My hubby bought it. It carries personal story and value that cannot be replaced. It may not look great in the photos but looks quite nice in person. The chandelier has multi-settings that can actually work well. We received lots of compliments on it. Someone did mentioned that the tone looks quite different in photos vs in person which might have some effect on the overall impression.

While interior design does not always have to take down walls and replace everything, There's an area of expertise called "Re-design". It's basically a sub category of interior design that works with clients's furniture that cannot be parted due to whatever reason or for people that are on a budget. They will use many techniques rg: colors, placement, size, height, de/emphasize, etc. to make something work together the best way possible without replacing a prized pocession.

Please keep feedbacks coming. it's great to hear what everyone's personal preferences and needs are!

I believe if the main tone of your dining room is natural & pale, a harmonic milky light source would be more beneficial than a scattered light chandelier... Chandelier used to pair with elegant settings, and with carpets or marble floor...

Again, just my 2 cents...

I really like the wall panels.  Where did u get them?  Is it hard to DIY?
作者: cllo    時間: 2012-2-22 10:08

i like the wall panels too. how much and where do you get them.

I have enough things to vacuum, I don't want to dust the wall too.

How much would you charge for interior design?

My place is totally builder grade.  I am comfortable going to Home Depot and do some handy work.  But I just don't have the eyes for design.

I got them at http://www.inhabitliving.com/modern-walls-floors/wall-flats.html. They shipped fr. USA. $86/ box of 10 panels covering approx 22.5 sq ft. I got a trade discount.

It's both hard and easy. Doing the panels on the wall was easy. Hard part is making it look nice and perfect. Most people's walls are not perfect due to house settlement or poor construction. Extra care is needed for measurement, trimming and cutting. You need to mind electrical outlets or lighting or wiring around the wall where you want to put the panels. We took extra care in grout filling, cutting, and prime plus painting. We also relocated electrical outlets and alarm motion sensor. We also framed it as a resolution to the wall's imperfection in dimensions. The wall will look as nice as how much work you put into it.

There's always some kind of trade off. To some, practicality is more important than beauty and comfort. The more mirrors, paintings, decorations at more equals to more dusting.
With regards to the wall flats I have, according to my cleaning lady, takes 2 minutes once/mo with a swiffer. She enjoys it more than having to wipe the walls with a wet cloth.

Like my husband and most of my clients, it's not their bowl of rice to design or envision colors, furniture, the big picture. Many opt for "safe" beige for everything! ;p!
It's great that you are a handyman. You save a lot and have a more opened mind!
I PM'd you.

Do you know anyone who does wallpaper/or wall panel job like yours? I would like to do a feature wall in my living room, but we are not handy at all.

I have a wallpaper man but wall panel is a very new thing. I haven't come across anyone who's confident to do it. Since it would be new to them, so we might as well do our own.
